是故胜兵先胜而后求战，败兵先战而后求胜。
善用兵者，修道而保法，故能为胜败之政。
这句啥意思：
所以，打胜仗的军队总是在具备了必胜的条件之后才交战，而打败仗的部队总是先交战，在战争中企图侥幸取胜。
善于用兵的人，潜心研究致胜之道，修明政治，坚持致胜的法制，所以能主宰胜败。
英文这么说：
Thus it is that in war the victorious 1 strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won,whereas he who is destined 2 to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.
The consummate 3 leader cultivates the moral law,and strictly 4 adheres to method and discipline; thus it is in his power to control success.

对于“先战”的结果的判断，是胜是负还是其它什么结果，自然是“预知胜利”时所应考虑的内容。很明显，“后求胜”应与“自己不可胜”有关，就是说“后求胜”是“然后谋求制造胜利的态势”的意思。“后求胜”的“胜”字与“胜兵先胜”里的“先胜”之“胜”字含义应完全相同。接下去的“修道而保法”，“修道”至少包含了“立于不败之地”、“胜兵先胜”、“而后求胜”三项内容；而“保法”则至少包含“而不失敌之败”、“而后求战”、“败兵先战”三项内容。
