LESSON 24 THE PET BIRD

Jane had 1 a bird that she kept in a cage 2.
It was 3 so tame 5 that it would 6 come to be fed from her hand.
Now and then she would let it out; and it would sit on the top of the cage or fly round the room.
As 4 she liked best to feed it, no one else fed the bird but her.
One day her aunt sent her a box of new toys. She was so pleased 7 with them, that she played all day with them. That day Jane did 9 not feed her bird.
Next day a friend came 10 to see Jane, and once more the poor bird got 11 no food.
Jane and her friend played all day with the box of toys.
On the third day Jane did not care 12 so much for the toys, and she went once more to play with her bird.
She went up to the cage with some nice seed 13 to give to it.
But the poor bird lay 8 dead 14 in the cage. It had died 15 for want of food.
Oh, what pain 16 it must have felt!
Boys and girls, keep this sad tale 17 in your minds 18, and be kind to your pets.
