Merry Christmas！圣诞节又来啦，你知道圣诞快乐为什么用“merry”而不是“happy”吗？今天Jenny和Adam就要说说这个重要的西方节日。
为什么是“merry”而不是“happy”
英语中说到节日或生日快乐都是用“happy”这个词，但圣诞祝福中却会用“merry”，不禁让人思考：
Why do we say happy for almost any holiday holidays, but merry Christmas?
18世纪狄更斯的小说A Christmas Carol《圣诞颂歌》（又译为《小气财神》）用到了这句话，随着印刷工业的发展和这本小说的流行，“Merry Christmas”的说法被人们广泛传播：

Merry和人名Mary，结婚Marry读音相同但是拼写不同：
Merry/mary/marry: /ˈmer.i/

含义不同
虽然happy和merry都是快乐的意思，但两者的含义有所差别：

英国v.s.美国
英国人更喜欢说“Happy Christmas”：
Happy Christmas is popular in Britain.
因为这是女王在圣诞致辞中的说法：
The royal family adopted "Happy Christmas" as their preferred greeting and others took note.
美国是个多元宗教的国家，很多宗教都有自己的节日，并不过圣诞节。为了以示尊重，体现包容，现在提倡用“Happy Holiday”取代“Merry Christmas”的说法：
"Merry Christmas" took on sentimental 3 meaning in the U.S. —— even hearing "merry" on its own now makes us think of December 25th.
