LESSON 43 The busy little lapp 第四十三课忙碌的小拉普兰人

There is a tribe 1 of busy little people who live in the Frozen 2 Zone, and who are very seldom seen anywhere else. 在冻结区有一个忙碌的小人部落，他们很少见到外面的世界。
They are called Lapps, which is short for Laplander. Lapland is the name of the country where they live. 人们叫他们拉普人，是拉普兰人的简称。他们住的地方就叫做拉普兰，
You will find it in the north of the map of Europe. 位于欧洲北部地区。
They do not live in huts, because it would not suit them to do so. 他们并不居住在房屋里，因为对他们来说不合适。
They are obliged to wander up and down the country; sometimes on the mountains, and sometimes in the plains. 他们在国内时常迁徙；有时候住在山里，有时候在平原上安家。
So they pitch tents, which can be easily changed from place to place. 所以他们住在帐篷里，因为方便移动。
The Lapp moves about in this way because of a very useful animal that God has given him, called the reindeer 3. 拉普人之所以经常搬迁是因为他们有一种很有用的动物，叫驯鹿。
The reindeer likes to move about. In the summer some very fierce flies, called mosquitoes, bite him. 驯鹿喜欢到处迁徙。夏天，蚊虫肆虐，驯鹿会深受其害。
To escape from them, he runs up the cold mountains, where the Lapp follows him, and sets up his tent. 为了摆脱这种痛苦，驯鹿就跑到阴凉的山里，拉普人就跟人驯鹿走，驯鹿到哪他们就在哪扎营。
In the winter the flies go away, and then the Lapp drives his reindeer down to the plain. 冬天等到没有了蚊子，拉普人就会把驯鹿赶到平原上。
So you see he has to shift his tent again. 所以他们又得搬一次家。
You would not think the tent very nice to live in. The door is so small that you could hardly enter by it. 你可能会觉得帐篷不是个居住的好地方。门口很小，进出艰难。
There is no chimney, but the smoke goes out at a hole in the top; 帐篷没有烟囱，但是顶上有洞，烟就从那出去；
that is, after it has made everybody's face very black. 所以，住在里面的人都会一脸漆黑。
There are no lamps or candles. The Lapps think the fire-light enough. 帐篷里没有灯也没有蜡烛。拉普人觉得有火光就足够了。
They sit, and they sleep, on skins spread on the floor. They find out the time by looking at the sun. 他们把兽皮铺在地上就能坐也能能睡。他们通过观察太阳来确定时间。
How many things the little Lapp has to do without! 这些小拉普人缺了多少东西啊！
