 LESSON 42 The lost child 第四十二课 失踪的小孩


It was a clear, cold, winter night, 那个冬天夜晚,晴朗而寒冷,
The heavens were brightly starred, 天空布满繁星,
When on St. Bernard's snowy height 在圣伯纳修道院
The good monks 2 kept their guard. 僧侣们保持着警惕。
And round their hearth 3, that night, they told,to one, who shelter craved 4, 那晚在炉边,他们对一个借宿的人谈起,
How the brave dog, he thought so old,full forty lives had saved; 那条年迈而勇敢的狗如何挽救整整四十条生命;
When suddenly, with kindling 5 eye,up sprang the old dog there, 突然,老犬眼睛放光,一跃而起,
As from afar a child's shrill 6 cry,rang through the frosty air. 因为孩子的尖叫声透过寒冷的空气传到了他们的耳中。
In haste the monks unbarred the door, 僧侣们急忙打开门,
Rugs round the mastiffs threw; 在狗背上绑好毯子;
And as they bounded forth 7 once more, 他们一边往前走一边说,

They hurried headlong down the hill, 他们急忙跑下山,

The dogs then with their charge, at last,up the steep mountain went. 随后和狗一起上了山。
The fire glowed bright with heaped-up logs, 柴火烧的很旺,

"Good dogs!" they cried, "good dogs, good dogs! “好狗!”他们欢呼,“真实好狗!
