What Is It?
这是什么？
On the last day of kindergarden, all the children brought presents for their teacher.
最后一天上幼儿园，孩子们都给老师带来了礼物。
The florist's son handed the teacher a gift. She held it up and said, "I bet I know what it is--it's some flowers!"
花店老板的儿子递给老师一包礼物，老师拿起来说：“我打赌我知道这是什么——这是鲜花！”
"That's right!" shouted the little boy.
“对啦！”小男孩大声说。
Then the candy store owner's daughter handed the teacher a gift. She held it up, shook it and said, "I bet I know what it is--it's a box of candy!"
接下来，糖果店老板的女儿递给老师一盒礼物。老师接过来，晃了晃说：“我猜我知道这里面是什么——这是一盒糖果！”
"That's right!" shouted the little girl.
“没错！”小女孩叫道。
The next gift was from the liquor store owner's son, little Johnny. The teacher held it up and saw that it was leaking. She touched a drop with her finger and tasted it. "Is it wine?" she asked.
再下面，酒店老板的儿子小约翰尼给老师送上了一盒礼物。老师接过来，看到时而有些液体漏了出来。她用手指沾了一滴，尝了尝，问道：“这是葡萄酒吗？”
"No," littlt Johnny answered.
“不是，”小约翰尼说。
The teacher touched another drop to her tongue. "Is it champagne 1?" she asked.
老师又用手指沾了一滴，尝了尝，问道：“是香槟吗？”
"No," he answered.
“不是，”小约翰尼又说。
Finally, the teacher said, "I give up. What is it?"
老师终于放弃了，说：“我猜不出了，这里面是什么？”
Little Johnny replied, "A puppy!"
小约翰尼答道：“是一只小狗！”
重点讲解：
1. hold up
举起；抬起；提起；
eg. She held up her hand stiffly.
她直挺挺地举着手。

2. I bet
我敢说；我确信；
eg. I bet you were good at games when you were at school.

3. give up
投降；认输；放弃；
eg. After a fruitless morning sitting at his desk he had given up.
他在书桌前徒劳地坐了一上午之后便放弃了。
eg. When faced with adversity she was never tempted 2 to give up.
面对逆境她从未想过放弃。

- There were two glasses of champagne on the tray.托盘里有两杯香槟酒。
