    Ross: Um, Monica and I aren't supposed to play football.

    Joey: Says who? Your mom?

    讲解be supposed to do something通常翻译为“应该、被期望做某事、被许可做某事”，常用于否定句之中。那么在这里Ross说“Monica and I aren’t supposed to play football”就是“Monica和我不允许玩橄榄球”的意思。

    理解这个词组的关键是supposed这个词。在这里它可以理解为suppose的形容词形式，而不是它的过去分词。supposed有三个基本含义。

    一是“必需的”(required)：

    He is supposed to go to the store.(他必需去商店。)We are supposed to be here at seven．(我们七点必须到。) 二是“允许的”(permitted)：

    We are not supposed to smoke here．(我们不能在这儿抽烟。)We are not supposed to watch TV before finishing homework．(我们在完成作业之前不能看电视。)三是“坚信的；期望中的”(firmly believed；expected)：

    在Friends的各个剧集中我们常常听到他们说bc supposed to do something 这个句式。例如，在第10季第12集中，Phoebe要结婚了，Chandler和Ross 中只有一个将成为伴郎，Phoebe觉得很难在他俩当中选择一个，于是她把决定权交到Rachel手中。Chandler和Ross两个便使出浑身解数讨好Rachel，好让Rachel选中自己。Rachel夹在中间，左右为难，就秘密地分别把两个都答应下来。Chandler和Ross都暗喜自己会是伴郎。但得知真相后，他俩一起去质问Rachel。不过最终他俩最终都输给了Mike家的狗。下面我们可以看一段Ross 和Chandler的对话。

    再举几则例子：We are not supposed to play football on Sundays．(我们不能在星期日踢足球。)As a real man，you are not supposcd to tell a lie．(作为一个真正的男子汉，你不应该撒谎。)口语中，我们还常说：I suppose so．(我想是的。)suppose you are night．(我想你是对的。)另外，我们有时还把suppose放在句首，即suppose(that)或supposing，作“如果，假定，假如”讲，相当于if／provided／providing．例如，Suppose we miss the tram，what will we do then?(假如我们误了那列火車。我们该怎么办?)Let’s suppose that the news is true．(让我们假定这消息是真的。)I ’d love to drop in your flat，supposing／if I am available one day．(我很想顺便拜访你。如果哪天我有空的话。)
