The One With The Triplets, aka The One Hundredth

The gang arrives at the hospital for Phoebe's labor 1. Joey makes a video documentary of the occasion, until he is beset 2 with pain; what is thought to be sympathy pains turns out to be kidney stones. Phoebe's doctor is obsessed 3 with Fonzie, but Ross's attempts to find a more satisfactory doctor only yield a very young looking resident whom Phoebe won't accept. Rachel tries to set Monica and herself up with two male nurses, which causes problems between Monica and Chandler. Joey can make everything (even grandma's chicken salad) sound dirty. Phoebe wants to keep one of the babies and manipulates Rachel into asking for her. Instead of two boys and a girl, Phoebe has two girls and a boy. Joey passes three kidney stones.

Ross: Hey, where are Monica and Rachel anyway?

Joey: Oh, a couple of nurses asked them out. Maybe they're with them.

    Chandler: Really? Male nurses?

Joey: Yeah, I was bummed 4 too.

Chandler: So they're going on dates? When?

Joey: I think Saturday?groans 5 in pain again).

Frank: (To Phoebe) What's with him?

Phoebe: Umm, sympathy pains. I thought it was really sweet at first, but now I think he's just trying to steal my thunder.

讲解steal someone’s thunder的意思是“抢某人的风头”;“在舞台上抢有利的位置”(to upstage someone)或“通过做同样的事情,破坏别人先前做该事的效果”(to destroy the effcct of what someone does or says by doing or saying;the same thing first)。例如:The Republicans stole the Democrats’thunder by including the most popular provisions of the Democratic proposal in their own bill.(共和党人抢了民主党人的风头,他们也在自己的议案中包括了最受大众欢迎的民主提案条款。)通常,If someone steals your thunder,he or she will present or use your idea, plan,as his or her own, especl。ally to his or her own advantage and wiothI)ut your consent.

steal someone’s thunder的英文解释是“use or appropriate another’s idea, espec iaIlv to one’s advantage”’。例如:It was Harold’s idea but they stole his thunaer and turned it into a massi’ve advertising 6 campaign without giving him eredit.(那本是哈罗德的想法,但是他们抢了他的风头,在没有指出是他的想法的情况下,将之用在了大规模的广告宣传之中。) This idiom comes from an actual incident in which playwright 7 and critic John Dennis(1657—1734)devised a“thunder machine”(by rattling 8 a sheet of tin backstage)for his play,Appius and Virginia(1709),and a few days later discovered the same device being used in a performance of Macbeth, whereupon he declared,“They steal my:hunder”(这则短语来自一个真实的事件,剧作家兼评论家约翰丹·尼斯(1657—1734年)为其戏剧《阿匹乌斯和弗吉尼亚》发明了一种“雷声机”(通过在后台抖动一块锡器),但是几天后,他发现这一机器被用在了戏剧《麦克白》(莎士比亚四大悲剧之一)的上演中。 He wanted to announce his discovery personally.but he was very angry because someone stole his hunder and printed the whole story in this morning’s newspaper.(他本想亲自宣布他的发现,可是使他万分生气的是,有人剽窃了他的成果,并已抢先将全部情况发表在今晨的报纸上。)

无论是Steal sb’s thunder还是steal the spotlight都不是良好的道德行为,我们在学习、积累知识的同时还应塑造良好的品性(shape good qualities of man),这样才能算得上human(有人情味)。

在第8季第1集中,Phoebe说:“I didn’t want to say anything because it’s your day;I didn’t want to steal your thunder”。

比如:steal the limelight译为“抢镜头、抢风头”,就比“偷聚光灯”好得多bummed是指“不高兴”,to feel less than happy,forlorn,disappointed。

谁知Phoebe说,“Oh no,none of to them are the tather.the tather s my brother”这着实把护士吓了一大跳。

叫作Gittle Geslie(Frank的妻子名字就是Geslie);最有意思的是.

[Cut to the waiting room, a thrice triumphant 10 Frank returns again.]

    Frank: Chandler's a girl!

    Chandler: Oh God, kindergarten flashback.

Frank: They musta read the sonogram wrong. 'Cause they, 'cause they thought it was a boy, but Chandler's a girl! Chandler's a girl!

    Chandler: Okay, keep saying it!

Alice: (running in from the elevator) Am I too late?!

    Frank: No-no ah, everything's okay. Everybody's healthy there's 30 fingers and 30 toes.

    Alice: We have our babies?

    Frank: Yeah.

Alice: (Starting to cry) Oh, we have our babies.

(They hug. And quickly that hug turns into a heated make out session, right there on the waiting room couch. Chandler, Rachel, and Monica quickly make their exits.) Frank告诉Leslie,孩子一切都好(30 fingers and 30 toes),一个脚指头也不少,然后,两人激动地拥抱在一起,让人没有想到的是他俩就在大庭广众下(等候室的沙发上,当着Monica,Chandler和Rachel的面)亲热了起来(turns into a heated make out session)。

Phoebe说:“Hey!S0 I had a great day,Rick and I really hit it off,and we started making out,and then my boss walked in and fired me for being a whore.”

Joey像个男学生似的狂笑着说:“Monica and Rachel made out.”

事实上,make out有两个意思,最初的意思是“进展”,只表示“考试成绩如何”(how you did on your school exam);不过,在如今美国俚语中,make out更多表示“亲热,爱抚,接吻”(kiss, cuddle, hug)等意思,指the a(t of two people engaging in prolonged kissing.更为热烈的making out称为necking(more sexual form of making out, known as necking)。
