In the morning, bright and early, Pinocchio started for school.
在明媚的清晨，皮诺乔出发去学校了。
Imagine what the boys said when they saw a Marionette 1 enter the classroom!
诸位想象一下，当孩子们看见一个木偶走进他们的教室会怎么反应！
They laughed until they cried. Everyone played tricks on him.
他们笑得流出了眼泪。所有人都捉弄他。
One pulled his hat off, another tugged 2 at his coat, a third tried to paint a mustache under his nose.
有人摘走他的帽子，有人扯他的外套，还有人想在他鼻子下面画胡子。
One even attempted to tie strings 3 to his feet and his hands to make him dance.
甚至有人想用线绑在他的脚和手上让他跳舞。
For a while Pinocchio was very calm and quiet.
起初皮诺乔冷静而又安静。
Finally, however, he lost all patience and turning to his tormentors, he said to them threateningly:
可终于，他完全失去了耐心，他向折磨他的人转过身去，对他们威胁说：
"Careful, boys, I haven't come here to be made fun of. I'll respect you and I want you to respect me."
“小心点，孩子们。我上这儿来可不是被你们取笑的。我尊重大家，希望大家也尊重我。”
"Hurrah 4 for Dr. Know-all! You have spoken like a printed book!" howled the boys, bursting with laughter.
“为自大者博士欢呼！你说话就像一本印刷书！”孩子们大叫，哄堂大笑。
One of them, more impudent 5 than the rest, put out his hand to pull the Marionette's nose.
他们中最大胆妄为的孩子伸手去抓木偶的鼻子。
But he was not quick enough, for Pinocchio stretched his leg under the table and kicked him hard on the shin.
可他不够快，因为皮诺乔在桌子下面伸出脚来，在他胫骨上狠狠踢了一下。
"Oh, what hard feet!" cried the boy, rubbing the spot where the Marionette had kicked him.
“唉哟！好硬的脚啊！”那孩子大叫，拼命搓着被木偶踢到的地方。
"And what elbows! They are even harder than the feet!" shouted another one, who, because of some other trick, had received a blow in the stomach.
“还有胳膊肘！它们比脚还硬！”另外一个叫到。他因为其它的恶作剧被木偶的胳膊打了一下肚子。
With that kick and that blow Pinocchio gained everybody's favor.
经过这么一踢一拳，皮诺乔得到了所有人的喜爱。
Everyone admired him, danced attendance upon him, petted and caressed 6 him.
所有人都钦佩他，在他面前跳舞，安抚和拥抱他。
