　　Two young engineers applied 1 for a single poition at a computer company. They both had the same qualifications. In order to determine which individual to hire, the applicants 3 were asked to take a test of 12 questions by the manager of human resources department.
　　两个年轻的工程师应聘一家电脑公司的同一个职位。他们的资历相当。为了决定雇用哪个，公司的人力资源部经理要他们做一个测试——回答12个问题。
　　Upon completion of the test, both men had each missed only one of the questions. The manager went to the first applicant 2 and said, "Thank you for your interest, but we've decided 4 to give the job to the other applicant."
　　测试结束后，两个人各有一个问题没答上来，经理对其中的一个说：“感谢你对我们公司的关注，可是我们决定聘用另一个人。”
　　"And why would you be doing that? We both got eleven questions correct," asked the rejected applicant.
　　“可是为什么呢？我们两人都答对了11道题呀，”不被录用的人问。
　　"We have based our decision not on the correct answers, but on the question you missed," said the department manager.
　　“我们做出这个决定不是基于正确的答案，而是基于你们没有答对的那个问题，”经理答道。
　　"And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?" the rejected applicant inquired.
　　“那么一个错误答案能比另一个错误答案好到哪里去呢？”不被录用的人问。
　　"Simple," said the department manager, "Your fellow applicant put down on question No.8, 'I don't know.' You put down, 'Neither do I.''"
　　“很简单，”经理说，“另一位应聘者对于第8题的回答是‘我不知道’；而你的回答是‘我也不知道。’”

　　2. in order to
　　为了；以便；目的在于
　　eg. Most schools are extremely unwilling 6 to cut down on staff in order to cut costs.

　　eg. We need to get rid of the idea that we must be liked all the time in order to be worthwhile.
　　我们必须抛弃那种认为要想活得有价值就得始终取悦他人的想法。
　　3. base on
　　以……为基础；
　　eg. He based his conclusions on the evidence given by the captured prisoners.
　　他根据被俘囚犯提供的证据得出了这个结论。
　　eg. One should always base his opinion on facts.
　　一个人应该始终以事实为依据发表自己的观点。
　　4. put down
　　写下；记录；键入
　　eg. Never put anything down on paper which might be used in evidence against you at a later date.
　　一定不要写下任何书面的东西，以免日后被用作对你不利的证据。
　　eg. We've put down on our staff development plan for this year that we would like some technology courses.
　　我们已经在今年的员工发展计划中写到我们希望有一些技术培训课程。
　　5. Neither do I
　　表示现实情况的否定。前面一句为否定句。表示我也没有，我也不那样；
　　eg. "Neither do I, " I answered promptly 7.
　　“我也是如此。”我马上答道。
　　eg. You do not know that and neither do I, but I suspect it will be poor.
　　你不知道回报会有多高,我也不知道,但我猜这个数字将会很低。
