    本集简介：

    Ugly Naked Guy decorates his tree. Monica and Rachel, low on funds, make cookies to give instead of cash as holiday tips to the paperboy, the mailman, the superintendent 1, etc.

    Then they receive mangled 2 papers and smashed packages; when their heater won't turn off and the super doesn't fix it, they fear he's also upset about not getting cash. Despite the heat, Rachel and Monica have a big Christmas party.

    Ross tries to make amends 3 with Rachel. He tells her to make a list about him, so she does; he obsesses 4 about her complaints. Phoebe discovers that everything she thought she knew about her biological father (including his picture) is a lie. Her grandmother knows where he lives, and it's not far.

    Phoebe (accompanied by Chandler and Joey) goes to visit him, but eventually decides she's not ready. Chandler and Joey have to do their Christmas shopping late on Christmas eve.

    ROSS: Uh, Macy's, third floor, home furnishings.

    PHOEBE: This is my father, this is a picture of my dad.

    CHANDLER: Nah, Phoebs, that's the guy that comes in the frame.

    PHOEBE: No it isn't, this is my dad, alright, I'll show you.

    RACHEL: Phoebe, I thought your dad was in prison.

    PHOEBE: No, that's my stepdad. My real dad's the one that ran out on us before I was born.

    圣诞节现在既是一个sacred，同时也是一个secular的节日。说到圣诞节，人们马上可以联想到诸如Christmas tree(圣诞树)，the Christmas ham(圣诞火腿)．Santa Claus(圣诞老人)，Jingle bells，Christmas cards(圣诞卡片)，Chrstmas socks(圣诞袜)，孩子们平安夜在壁炉上悬挂圣诞袜，因为圣诞老人说过要在圣诞前夜从烟囱下来把礼物放到袜子里。

    我们现在通常见到的Santa Claus是一个round and plump(胖乎乎)、jolly(笑客可掬)的old elf(老人)，他长着一只红红的鼻子和厚厚的白胡子，身穿一付白毛领子的红衣服，腰扎黑带子。这个圣诞老人叫Saint Nicholas，是很早以前的一个罗马天主教的Bishop(主教)。He was known for his charity andwiscom．(他以慈善和智慧而闻名于世。)Legends tell of him coming from a wealthy family and giving all his money to the poor．(据说他来自于富足的家庭，把自己所有的钱都捐献给了穷人。)那么他是怎样变成神话人物的呢?

    Saint Nicholas生活于公元4世纪，生前写了许多宗教经典著作，举世闻名。他死后，便被推崇为圣人。每年12月6日，即他逝世的日子，北欧的一些国家都要举行纪念活动。不仅如此，民间流传许多有关圣尼古拉的故事。

    相传，每年圣诞节这天，圣尼古拉都要骑着一匹白马挨家挨户地拜访，看到哪家的小孩老实听话，就送给他几件新年礼物。这个故事被荷兰移民带到了美国，并广泛流传。从此，Saint Nicholas这一形象便出现在所有美国人的圣诞庆祝活动中。但是，荷兰人带来的圣诞老人看上去很威严，他既给人礼物，也给人惩罚。于是，1812年，一个叫Clcmcnt Moor的美国人对其加以修改，他在为自己孩子写的一首Christmas poem(圣诞诗)A Visit from St．Nicholas(《圣·尼古拉的来访》)中，把圣诞老人的形象焕然一新，成为一个在圣诞之夜，flies in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeers(驾着一架八匹白鹿拉的雪橇的)ioily old elf(快乐的小老头儿)。

    他一家一家地奔走，每路过一家，便停下来，顺着梯子爬上这家人的chimney(烟囱)，然后把圣诞礼物由烟囱放进壁炉里后，就悄然离去。不久，这首诗被纽约一家报纸刊登，由于圣诞老人的形象变得活泼可爱，从而很快为所有美国人，尤其是儿童们所接受，孩子们至今对其还坚信不疑。又过了几十年，有一个叫Thomas Nast的cartoonist(漫画家)塑造了更为新颖的圣诞老人形象。他以童年时期在德国认识的一个慈祥的老人为模特，从1860年起，通过为一家叫Harper's Weekly的周刊不断地画圣诞老人像，最终创作出开头所描绘的那个圣诞老人。如今，Nast所塑造的圣诞老人形象has traveled across the globe(已风靡全世界)，成为人们心目中真正的圣诞老人。
