the thirteenth floor
There were two very stupid robbers. They were robbing an office building. They heard police sirens and got nervous.
The first one said, "Let's jump down to the street." The second one said,"But we're on the thirteenth floor!" The first one screamed back, "This is no time to be superstitious 1."
Notes:
1. There were two vety stupid robbers.
从前有两个很笨的强盗。
thief是指偷偷作案的小偷，而robber是指以暴力抢夺的强盗。
2. They were robbing an office building.
他们正在抢劫一间办公大楼，
3. They heard police sirens and got nervous.
们听到警笛声后变得很紧张。
get后面加形容词表示“变得…” 如：get quiet（变得安静）。
4. The first one said, "Let's jump down to the street."
第一个说：“我们跑到街上去吧。”
5. The second one said,"But we're on the thirteenth floor!"
第二个说：“但是我们在13楼啊!”
英美楼层的表达方式不同，美国：the first floor(一楼）， the second floor( 二偻）、the third floor( 7楼），依此类推,：英 国：the ground floorf （一楼)，the first floor( 二楼）、the second floor(三楼），依此类推。地下层的表达方式则相同：地下~楼(the first basement level)。其他依此类推。用于表楼层名称 时，floor用来表示地上的楼层，而level用来表示地下的楼层。
6. The first one screamed back, "This is no time to be superstitious."
第一个人大叫着回答：“现在没有时间迷信。”
13这个数宇在欧美被视为unlucky thirteen (不吉利的 13),因为耶稣与十二门徒共进最后的晚餐，于是人们就认为，如果13个人一同进餐的话，其中一人会遭遇不幸；又因为耶稣是在13号星期五被钉在十字架上，所以他们认为 每逢13号又恰好是星期五的话，是最不吉利的日子。美国的饭店通常没有13楼和13号房间。
