Pan是盆的意思。Pan out是淘金用语。十九世纪的加州是人们实现黄金梦的宝地，淘金的人蜂拥而至。他们用陶金盆pan把沙子洗掉叫做pan out the sand，泥沙随水流去之后，如果运气好的话，盘上就会留下金灿灿的颗粒，那就是淘金成功了。由此，而产生了习语pan out，用来表示“成功，好结果”。
