Seizing the sword, Beowulf lifted it high above his head, and struck with all his might. 贝奥武夫抓起宝剑，举过头顶，用尽全身力气一击。
Instantly 1 the monster fell dead. Then a strange thing happened. 怪物立刻倒地而死。然后一件奇怪的事情发生了。
The blade 2 of the sword melted away, and only the hilt was left in his hand. 剑刃融化了，手里只剩下剑柄。
Looking about him, Beowulf saw piles of gold and silver on every side. 贝奥武夫环顾四周，发现四周都是成堆的金银财宝。
He gazed 3 in wonder at the treasure, but he did not touch it. 他惊奇地盯着宝藏，但没有拿。
He had gone down into the lake to save the Danes from their terrible enemy. 他下到湖里从怪物手中救出丹麦人。
He had won the victory, but he would not make himself rich with the evil 4 monster’s gold. 他赢得了胜利，但他不愿用那邪恶的怪物的金子使自己发财。
One thing only did Beowulf take from the cave. 贝奥武夫只从山洞里拿走了一样东西。
He still held in his hand the hilt of the wonderful sword. 他手里仍然握着那把神奇宝剑。
This he would take to King Hrothgar, and together they would read the strange writing on the twisted gold. 他要把这封信交给赫洛斯加国王，他们一起读那扭曲的金柄上奇怪的字迹。
So up from the dark lake came Beowulf, and back he went to the king’s palace. 于是贝奥武夫从暗湖上来了，回到王宫。
The king and queen came forward to meet him, and all the warriors 5 crowded around. 国王和王后走上前来迎接他，所有的勇士都围了上来。
When Beowulf had told of his battle under the water, he gave the hilt of the sword to Hrothgar. 贝奥武夫告诉他水下之战，把剑柄给了赫罗斯加。
All around the hilt was written a story which told that the sword had been made for a giant, hundreds of years before. 剑柄周围描述了一个故事，说是这把剑是几百年前为一个巨人打造。
