　　The wood was green as mosses 4 of the Icy Glen; the trees stood high and haughty 5, feeling their living sap; 树林绿得象冰谷里的苔藓；树木傲然屹立，使人感到它们生机勃勃；
　　the industrious 6 earth beneath was as a weaver 7's loom 8, with a gorgeous carpet on it, 下面勤勉的大地好象是架织布机，机上盖了一条漂亮的地毡，
　　whereof the ground-vine tendrils formed the warp 9 and woof, and the living flowers the figures. 地上的葡萄藤蔓就是经纬线，而那些生气蓬勃的花朵就是图样。
　　All the trees, with all their laden 10 branches; all the shrubs 11, and ferns, and grasses; 所有的树木，连同它们所有的累累的枝桠；还有那些灌木，羊齿植物，青草；
　　the message-carrying air; all these unceasingly were active. 那传递信息的微风；所有这一切都十分活跃。
　　Through the lacings of the leaves, the great sun seemed a flying shuttle weaving the unwearied verdure. 那只大太阳，透过叶边看去，宛如一只飞梭，在织着那张织个不完的碧绿毯子。
　　Oh, busy weaver! unseen weaver!—pause!—one word!— whither flows the fabric 12? what palace may it deck? wherefore all these ceaseless toilings? 忙碌的织工呵！眼不能见的织工呵！——停一停——只说一句话！——织物跑到哪里去啦？它去装饰什么宫殿了？所有这些不停不息的劳作都是为的什么呀？
　　Speak, weaver!—stay thy hand!— but one single word with thee! 说呀，织工！——把手歇一歇！只要跟你说一句话就够了！
　　Nay—the shuttle flies— the figures float from forth 13 the loom; the fresher-rushing carpet for ever slides away. 不——梭子在飞——图样不住地浮现在织机上；大水奔流似的地毡始终在悄悄地闪开去。
　　The weaver-god, he weaves; and by that weaving is he deafened 14, that he hears no mortal voice; 那个纺织之神，他织呀织的，织得他耳朵都聋了，听不到人声。
　　and by that humming, we, too, who look on the loom are deafened; 那纺机的嗡嗡声，弄得我们这些想着织机的人，耳朵也聋了；
　　and only when we escape it shall we hear the thousand voices that speak through it. 我们只有离开那织机，才听得到织机里传出来的无数的声响。
　　For even so it is in all material factories. 在一切制造物质的工厂里也正是这般情况。
