 　　LESSON 2 Little JIM 第二课 小吉姆

　　The cottage was a thatched one, 一个茅草屋,
　　The outside old and mean; 外面又老又寒酸
　　Yet everything within that cot 然而屋内的一切
　　Was wondrous 1 neat and clean. 是多么的整洁干净。
　　The night was dark and stormy, 黑夜里暴风雨狂虐
　　The wind was howling wild; 风在咆哮;
　　A patient mother knelt beside 病人的母亲跪在旁边
　　The deathbed of her child: 她孩子的病榻上:
　　A little worn-out creature— 一个可怜的小生命-
　　His once bright eyes grown dim; 他曾经明亮的眼睛变得暗淡;
　　He was a collier's only child— 他是一个科利尔独子
　　They called him little Jim. 他们叫他吉姆。
　　And oh, to see the briny 2 tears 哦,看到咸的眼泪
　　Fast hurrying down her cheek, 快匆匆流过她的脸颊,
　　As she offered up a prayer in thought; 她默默祷告;
　　She was afraid to speak, 不敢说话,
　　Lest she might waken one she loved 免得她可能唤醒她的最爱
　　Far better than her life; 远比她的生命;

　　And beckon 3 little Jim! 照耀着小吉姆!
　　I have no pain, dear mother, now; “我,现在没有痛苦,亲爱的妈妈;
　　But oh, I am so dry! 但是啊,我口干!
　　Just moisten  poor Jim's lips again; 再一次滋润可怜的吉姆的嘴唇;
　　And, mother, don't you cry. 妈妈,别哭。”
　　With gentle, trembling haste she held 她轻轻,颤抖着举起
　　The tea-cup to his lips; 茶杯贴近他的嘴唇;
　　He smiled, to thank her, as he took 他笑了,感谢她,喝了
　　Three tiny little sips 4. 三个小口。
　　Tell father, when he comes from work, “告诉父亲,当他工作回来的时候,
　　I said good-night to him; 我对他说晚安;
　　And, mother, now I'll go to sleep— 妈妈,现在我将安息”
　　Alas 5! poor little Jim! 唉!可怜的吉姆!
　　She saw that he was dying— 她看到他——死亡
　　The child she loved so dear 她如此爱她的孩子
　　Had uttered the last words that she 说出了她可能曾经希望听到的
　　Might ever hope to hear. 最后一句话。
　　The cottage door was opened, 小屋的门被打开了,
　　The collier's step was heard; 父亲的脚步声可以听到;
　　The mother and the father met, 母亲和父亲见面,
　　Yet neither spoke 6 a word! 然而,没有说一个字!
　　He knew that all was over— 他知道,都结束了-
　　He knew his child was dead; 他知道他的孩子已经死了;
　　He took the candle in his hand, 他手里拿着蜡烛,
　　And walked towards the bed. ,向床上走去。

　　And see! his wife has joined him— 看看!他的妻子加入了他-
　　The stricken couple kneel! 伤心的几个跪!
　　With hearts bowed down with sadness, 随着悲伤,伤心心下拜
　　They humbly 8 ask of Him, 他们谦卑地问他,
　　In heaven once more to meet again 在天堂能否再次见面
　　Their own poor little Jim. 他们可怜的小吉姆。
