   lick 1这个词大家也许都很熟。它最普遍应用的意思是“舔,”但是lick在习惯用语里可以表示不同的意思,而且lick既是动词又是名词,今天要学的习惯用语是: lick the habit 2。 habit也是个常用的词,解释为"习惯"。


  那么这里的lick是什么意思呢?整个习惯用语又表示什么呢?我们听个例子来体会吧。说话的人刚看了医生,医生说他的血压升高了,而且慢性咳嗽不但没好,反而更严重了。医生劝他得尽一切努力戒烟,因为抽烟确实对他的健康有害。他一回家就赶紧把医生的意见告诉太太,并表示自己戒烟的决心,注意他话里用了习惯用语lick the habit:
  例句1:Honey, I know I've tried to stop before and I didn't have the willpower to stop for more than a month or two. But this time I'm going 3 to lick the habit even 4 if it kills 5 me!
  他向太太承认自己过去也试过戒烟,只是没坚强的意志,坚持不了一、两个月,但是这次他可是狠下决心了,拼了命也要把烟戒掉。
  这里他用了习惯用语lick the habit表示克服抽烟这恶习。
  显然lick这个词在这儿的意思不是“舔,”,而是“克服,” “征服”或者“打败。” lick作这种解释的时候不只是跟habit这样的词搭配成短语,还能组成其它的习惯用语,例如: lick somebody 6 good。
  人们在谈运动比赛的时候时常会用到习惯用语lick somebody good。下面是一位大学足球队教练临阵前在鼓励队员的士气。他们的对手在赛场上跟他们有多年的宿怨。
  例句2:Okay, listen to me, men, if we use our heads and hit those guys 7 as 8 hard as we can every play, we'll lick them good today and get even for the way they beat 9 us last year.
  去年他们球队败在对方手下,他叮嘱队员,要开动脑筋每一回合都竭尽全力狠狠打击那些家伙。这样今天他们能报去年那一箭之仇。
  换句话说就是把对方彻底打败。可见这里的lick them good意思是狠狠打败他们。
