Nick:Hi everybody, this is Nick. Welcome to teaching 1 series 2 "how do you say this in American English."
Nick.
Brad
这种时候他们就可能会说,"you are all set". 最后你搞定啦,他(职员)不会说,"hey you are done." 所以他们一般会使用这个短语,"you are all set", you-are-all-set,连读,you're. So when you open a bank account, you have to fill out a lot of forms, right?
Brad:Of course, there's a few of papers 4 you need to fill out. We have personal information.
Nick:Yeah and you have to provide a lot of private information and stuff 5. And then when you get done with all of these, the staff might say," hey you are all set. You are good." So that means 6 you are good to go, right?
Brad:Yeah for the most of part when the speaker asks, "ok, we are all set", it's almost a question even though it's a form of a statement 7, before you say goodbye. So it doesn't sound like "ok, you are done now, get out." So it's like there's a lot…
Nick:More polite.
Brad:Yeah more polite, at least there's room for questions. So instead of saying "ok, bye now"
Nick:So you don't even have a chance to ask something else.
Brad:Yeah, an example that I though was if you are at a restaurant. Everyone's finished. Everyone paid the bill. Before saying, "ok, let's get up and leave", say, "is everyone set?" In case someone needs to use bathroom.Someone needs to, I don't know.It could be something like someone are supposed to sit down because their stomach is full of food. So we'll be likely to ask, "Is everyone set?" Anyway, and you'll say, "ok, let's go."
Nick:Thank you. Brad 刚刚就是说,you are all set可以给人家一个提问的一个空间。 如果他跟你说, "you are all set" 或者问你"are you all set?" 如果没有搞定的话,或者还有什么问题要问,比如你可以说, "Can I change my phone number later?" Someone might say, "are you all set." In restaurant, right? To ask if they can go. 如果没有搞定的话,可能说,比如我去上个厕所, "I need to go to the bathroom." 如果直接说,we are done. Just go. So this is today's lesson. I'll see you guys next time.
Brad:Bye everyone.
