Mr Hall:          I left a suitcase on the train to London the other day.

Attendant:     Can you describe it, sir?

Mr Hall:   It’s a small blue case and it’s got a zip 1. There’s a label 2 on the handle with my name and address on it.

Attendant:       Is this case yours?

Mr Hall:        No, that’s not mine.

Attendant:     What about this one? This one’s got a label.

Mr Hall:        Let me see it.

Attendant:     What’s your name and address?

Mr Hall:      David Hall,

83, Bridge Street.

Attendant:       That’s right.

D.N.Hall.

83.Bridge Street.

Attendant:       Three pound and fifty pence 3 please.

Mr Hall:          Here you are.

Attendant:       Thank you.

Mr Hall:          Hey!

Attendant:       What’s the matter?

Mr Hall:          This case doesn’t belong to me! You’ve given me the wrong case!

1.I left a suitcase on the train to London the other day. 几天前我把一只手提箱忘在开往伦敦的火车上了。

句中left是leave的过去式。leave在这里表示“遗忘”、“丢下”,通常可与表示地点的短语连用。又如:

I left my glasses in the library.

我把眼镜忘在图书馆里了。

the other day表示“几天前”。the other +表示时间的名词通常只与过去时态连用。类似的短语有:the other morning/afternoon/evening/night(几天前上午/下午/晚上/夜里),the other week/ month/ year(几周/月/年前)。

2.There's a label on the handle with my name and address on it. 箱把上有一标签,上面写着我的姓名和住址。

句中介词with在这里可理解为“有”的意思。

3.fifty pence, 50 便士。

pence是penny(便士)的复数形式,表示币值。

所有格形容词和所有格代词都是用来表示所有关系的。所有格形容词是限定词,放在名词前与名词构成名词短语,在句中作定语用。所有格代词后面不能再加名词,在句中作主语、宾语、表语用。

He described the whole event in detail.
