[00:03.02]Business Strategies

[00:06.77]Part Two

[00:09.40]Listening-Centered Activities

[00:13.46]Listening 1

[00:17.28]Exercise 2

[00:20.70]Directions:

[00:23.72]Listen carefully and decide who is speaking based on the roles stated in Exercise 1.

[00:32.26]Then compare your answers with your partner. The first one has been done for you.

[00:40.36]Sales Manager:Look, it's obvious. If we increase sales, we'll make a profit;

[00:46.76]and if we want to increase our sales, we'll have to increase our spending on advertising 1.

[00:53.68]Financial Manager:No, you're absolutely wrong.

[00:57.64]We haven't got the money to increase our spending on advertising.

[01:02.96]If we increase our spending and still our sales didn't go up,

[01:07.86]we would be in serious financial difficulties.

[01:12.11]We should think about reducing our costs.

[01:16.25]If we reduced our spending on advertising and on other things,

[01:22.26]then we'd be in a stronger position.

[01:26.47]Production Manager:I think what we need is a new product.

[01:30.68]The products we are selling now are becoming old-fashioned.

[01:35.69]Few people want to buy them.

[01:39.58]If we introduced a more up-to-date product we'd be more competitive now.

[01:45.95]Financial Manager:But we haven't got the money to back a new design.

[01:51.02]General Manager:Gentlemen, please! Let's not talk about

[01:55.63]"If we did this such and such would happen."

[02:00.10]Let's think of the real possibilities.

[02:04.96]Now what about the contract with Harris. Are we going to get it?

[02:09.92]Sales Manager:I think-if I go and see Harris tomorrow and make him a good offer,

[02:16.37]We'll get the contract. If we delay, we'll be too late.

[02:22.70]General Manager:Well, if we can get the contract, we'll have some profit in hand.

[02:28.54]So, go ahead and make him the offer. Then we'll discuss our advertising situation.

[02:35.66]Exercise 3

[02:39.16]Directions:

[02:42.50]Listen again to know the suggestion/decision of each speaker.

[02:49.81]Fill in the missing information with what you get from the tape.

[02:55.75]Check the answers with your partner.

[03:00.11]Listening 2

[03:03.82]Exercise 1

[03:07.78]Directions:

[03:11.48]Listen to the talk and then discuss in pairs the following questions.

[03:18.76]Good morning, I'd like to welcome you to our organization.

[03:24.91]Now you all know which departments you are going to,

[03:29.84]but before you go off,

[03:33.91]I'm going to tell you a little bit about us

[03:38.66]and about the rules and regulations which we try to adhere to.

[03:44.64]The reason why we have these rules is that they help us all to know what we can do,

[03:51.62]what we must do and what we shouldn't do -

[03:56.99]and in the long run make this a happy place to work in.

[04:03.07]First of all the flexitime system.

[04:08.29]Most of you can choose what time you are going to start and finish.

[04:14.09]However, you must all be here for core time, which is from 10 till 3.

[04:21.14]You should all work for a minimum of 37 hours a week

[04:26.04]and normally you shouldn't work more than 41 hours.

[04:31.69]If you look at your job descriptions

[04:36.01]you'll see that you should put in an average of 38.5 hours a week.

[04:42.06]This means you can put in up to an extra 2.5 hours per week.

[04:48.18]However, at the end of a month you shouldn't have more than 10 hours overtime 2,

[04:55.13]because only 10 hours can be claimed. Is that clear?

[05:00.92]You all have 18 days' holiday a year.

[05:05.42]Ten of these 18 days must be taken during July when the company will be closed.

[05:12.70]The other eight days may be taken in either one or two installments 3,

[05:19.43]for example five days and three days or six days and two days, etc.

[05:27.20]But you can't have eight separate single days off or four 2-day periods off.

[05:34.33]We have a canteen here, where you can have lunch.

[05:39.84]Lunch tickets are on sale on Monday mornings only

[05:44.99]and this means you must buy your tickets then for the rest of the week

[05:50.53]The canteen is open between 12:30 and 2 o'clock and there are two sittings.

[05:57.44]You should decide on Monday which sitting you are going to attend

[06:02.84]and tell the supervisor 4 when you buy your tickets.

[06:07.74]So, any questions about these three points - flexitime, holidays and lunch-

[06:16.09]before I move on to the next matter?

[06:20.27]Exercise 2

[06:23.87]Directions:

[06:27.29]Read the information given below first. Then, as you listen again,

[06:35.06]put a tick in the true column
