今天要学的习惯用语是：down for the count。 count在这里指数数目的举动。这个习惯用语流传至今至少八十来年了。它是从拳击运动借来的。当一名拳击手被对方击倒在地以后，裁判会站在他的上方慢慢地从一数到十，要是他不能在数到十之前挣扎着站立起来、准备继续比赛，那么他就输了。换句话说他就彻底失败了。当然习惯用语down for the count是作比喻用的，它常被用在工商界、政坛或者法律诉讼中，还甚至还用来说情场失恋。
