　　Did you ever go far out upon the great ocean? 你是否曾经在大海里远航？

　　How beautiful it is to be out at sea, when the sea is smooth and still! 当风平浪静的时候，海面上是多么漂亮啊！
　　Let a storm approach, and the scene is changed. 若让暴风雨接近，场景就完全变了样。
　　The heavy, black clouds appear in the distance, and throw a deep, deathlike shade over the world of waters. 厚重的乌云在不远处出现，给这个水的世界投下一个颜色很深的、死亡般的阴影。
　　The captain and sailors soon see in the clouds the signs of evil. All hands are then set to work to take in sail. 船长和水手们很快在乌云中看到了不祥的迹象。所有人手都被派去把船帆收起来。
　　The hoarse 1 notes of the captain, speaking through his trumpet 2, are echoed from lip to lip among the rigging. 船长对着扩音器广播着，他沙哑的语调在帆索边忙碌的水手们口中重复回响着。
　　Happy will it be, if all is made snug 3 before the gale 4 strikes the vessel 5. 如果能在一阵猛烈的海风袭击船身之前将一切都准备妥当，大家都会很高兴地松口气。
　　At last, the gale comes like a vast moving mountain of air. It strikes the ship. 最后，海风来了，像一座巨大的移动着的空气山，向船袭来。
　　The vessel heaves and groans 6 under the dreadful weight, and struggles to escape through the foaming 7 waters. 惊人的重量使得船身不断地上下起伏，发出咯吱咯吱的声音。轮船挣扎着想要从冒着泡沫的水里逃开。
　　If she is far out at sea, she will be likely to ride out the storm in safety. 如果它远航在海里，很有可能经历暴风雨后安然无恙。
　　But if the wind is driving her upon the shore, the poor sailors will hardly escape being dashed upon the rocks, and drowned. 但若是强风把它吹向了岸边，可怜的水手们将很难逃脱撞上岩石，溺水身亡的命运。
　　Once there was a ship in a storm. Some of her masts were already broken, and her sails lost. 曾经有一艘船在海上遇到了风暴，它的桅杆有些已经折断，船帆也不知去向。
　　While the wind was raging, and the billows were dashing against her, the cry was heard, "A man has fallen overboard!" 这时候，狂风呼啸着袭来，巨浪不断地拍打船身，只听一个声音喊道：“有人从船上落水啦！”
　　Quickly was the boat lowered, and she was soon seen bounding on her way over the mountain waves. 人们迅速从大船上放下一只小船，它很快就在如山般的巨浪里颠簸前进。
　　At one moment, the boat seemed lifted to the skies, and the next, it sank down, and appeared to be lost beneath the waves! 在这一刻，小船仿佛被举到了天上，而下一刻，它又沉了下去，好似消失在了巨浪下面。
