　　LESSON 39 The wood-mouse 第三十九课林鼠

　　Do you know the little wood-mouse, 你知道小林鼠吗？
　　That pretty little thing 那个非常小的东西
　　That sits among the forest leaves, 它坐在森林树叶之间，
　　Beside the forest spring? 就在森林泉水的附近。
　　Its fur is as red as the chestnut 1, 它的毛像栗子一样红，
　　And it is small and slim; 又小又细；
　　It leads a life most innocent 它过着最天真的生活
　　Within the forest dim. 在森林的幽暗处。
　　'Tis a timid,gentle creature, 它是个胆小温和的生物，
　　And seldom comes in sight; 很少进入人的视野；
　　It has a long and wiry tail, 它长着细长结实的尾巴，
　　And eyes both black and bright. 眼睛又黑又亮。
　　It makes its nest of soft dry moss 2, 它以柔软的干苔筑巢，
　　In a hole so deep and strong; 在一个又深又坚固的洞里；
　　And there it sleeps secure and warm, 在那儿它安全温暖地睡觉，
　　The dreary 3 winter long. 度过枯燥漫长的冬天。
　　And though it keeps no almanac, 虽然它不懂日历，
　　It knows when flowers are springing; 但它知道春天花会开；
　　And waketh to its summer life 夏天的时候醒来，
　　When nightingales are singing. 就是当夜莺高歌的时候。
　　Upon the boughs 5 the squirrel sits, 松鼠坐在大树枝上，
　　The wood-mouse plays below; 林鼠在下面玩耍；
　　And plenty of food it finds itself 它给自己找到很多食物
　　Where the beech 6 and chestnut grow. 就是从长山毛榉和栗子的地方。
　　In the hedge-sparrow's nest it sits, 它坐在篱雀的窝里，
　　When its summer brood is fled, 因为夏天的那一窝飞走了，
　　And picks the berries from the bough 4 它从大树枝上摘梅子，
　　Of the hawthorn 7 overhead. 头上顶着的是山楂。
　　I saw a little wood-mouse once, 我曾见过一次林鼠，
　　Like Oberon in his hall, 就像在殿里的奥伯龙，
　　With the green green moss beneath his feet, 其脚下踏着绿绿的青苔，
　　Sit under a mushroom tall. 坐在一个高高的蘑菇下。
　　I saw him sit, and his dinner eat, 我看见他坐在那儿吃他的晚餐，
　　All under the forest tree; 就在森林的树下；
　　His dinner of chestnut ripe and red, 他晚餐吃的栗子熟的发红，

　　It did my spirit good, 那让我的灵魂感到舒畅，

　　I saw that He regardeth them— 我看到神如此关心它们——
　　Those creatures weak and small; 就那些弱小的生命；
　　Their table in the wild is spread 它们的餐桌在野外被铺开
　　By Him who cares for all. 因神关爱着所有的一切。
