第三章 逃走
The barn was very large.
谷仓很大。
It was very old.
它很旧了。
It smelled of hay
里面有干草的气味，
and it smelled of manure 1.
有肥料的气味。
It smelled of the perspiration 2 of tired horses
里面有干活累了的马的汗味，
and the wonderful sweet breath of patient cows.
有吃苦耐劳的母牛的极好闻的气息。
It often had a sort of peaceful smell
谷仓让人闻上去感到天下太平，
as though nothing bad could happen ever again in the world.

It smelled of grain and of harness dressing 3 and of axle grease
它充满了谷物、马具套、车轴油、
and of rubber boots and of new rope.

And whenever the cat was given a fish-head to eat,

the barn would smell of fish.

But mostly it smelled of hay,
不过最强烈的是干草气味，
for there was always hay in the great loft 4 up overhead.

And there was always hay being pitched down

to the cows and the horses and the sheep.
