His padded hands were so clumsy and the nuts were so small that he dropped almost as many as he put in the basket. 他那填塞着稻草的手是多么地不灵巧，而坚果又是这么小，因而掉落的坚果和放进篮子里的一样多。
But the Scarecrow did not mind how long it took him to fill the basket, for it enabled him to keep away from the fire, 但是稻草人并不在乎花多长时间，因为使他能够离开那火，
as he feared a spark might get into his straw and burn him up. 他害怕那一股闪闪发光的东西，害怕只要一沾到它，就会把他烧尽。
So he kept a good distance away from the flames, and only came near to cover Dorothy with dry leaves when she lay down to sleep. 所以他和火焰保持着一个相当远的距离，只有在多萝茜躺下去睡觉的时候，他跑过去，用干叶子遮盖着她。
These kept her very snug 1 and warm, and she slept soundly until morning. 这些树叶子，使她觉得十分舒适和温暖，一直酣睡到早晨。
