LESSON 14 Story of a parrot 第十四课 鹦鹉的故事
A poor man had a parrot. 一个可怜的人养了一只鹦鹉。
The parrot had been taught to say the words, There is no doubt about it. 这只鹦鹉被教会了说这句话“关于它毫无疑问。”
These words were all it could learn, and it might have been heard all day long either whistling 1 a tune 2, or calling out, 它只学了这句话,或许它整天只听到吹着小曲的或者大声喊着的
There is no doubt about it!—There is no doubt about it! “此事毫无疑问!”“此事毫无疑问!”
To every question Poll 3 always gave the same reply—There is no doubt about it! 对所有的问题,Poll总是给出同一种答案---“此事毫无疑问。”
One day its master went to market to sell it. 一天,它的主人带它去赶集要把它卖掉,
Who'll buy my parrot? cried he. Twenty pounds for my parrot! 大喊道,“有没有人买鹦鹉?”“只要20镑。”
A man, hearing the high price that was asked, turned to the parrot, and said, Poll, art thou worth twenty pounds? 一位男士听到这个高价后,转向了鹦鹉,问道“Poll,你值20磅吗?”
There is no doubt about it! was Poll's reply. “毫无疑问”鹦鹉回答道。
The man was so pleased, that he bought the bird, and carried it home. 这个人很高兴,他买走了鹦鹉,把它带回家。
Some time after, he was sorry for his bargain. 一段时间之后,他后悔了这笔买卖。
Standing 4 beside the cage of the parrot, he said, What a fool I was, to throw so much money away! 站在鹦鹉笼子旁边,说道,我真蠢啊,白扔了这么多钱!”
There is no doubt about it! cried the bird. And this time the parrot was right. “毫无疑问你就是蠢!”鹦鹉大喊道。这次鹦鹉回答对了。
