4. Theirs was a serious business, and even those reviewers who wore their learning slightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Earnest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about.
【分析】并列复合句。and 连接两个并列分句。第一个分句为简单的主系表结构，第二个分句主干为 those reviewers...could be trusted to know...。句中 who 引导的定语从句修饰 reviewers, like George Bernard Shaw and Earnest Newman 为插入语，表举例，what 引导的从句作的 know 的宾语。
【译文】这些评论家们所从事的是严肃的事业，甚至那些喜欢卖弄学问的评论家们（像萧伯纳和欧内斯特?纽曼）也知道在做什么，这一点是可以肯定的。
【点拨】1） wear 原意为“穿，戴”的意思，本句中是“呈现，表现”的意思。 2) lightly“稍微地；轻易地，容易地”，句中 wore their learning slightly 意为“稍稍卖弄一下他们的学问”。

【译文】纽曼写道，“拥有足够思想或足够文学天赋能在新闻业中成就自己的事业的作者是如此之少，以至于我禁不住把“新闻业”定义成“被某些不受读者欢迎的作家应用在拥有大量读者的作家身上的一个表示轻蔑的名词”。
【点拨】1)brain“大脑；智慧，思想”本句中是“思想”。2) read 本句中用作形容词，意思是“有大量读者的”。
