1、Scientists jumped to the rescue with Some distinctly shaky evidence to the effect that insects would eat us up if birds failed to control them.
【分析】多重复合句。句子主干为Scientists jumped to the rescue。with some distinctly shaky evidence 作伴随状语,翻译时为了使译文流畅，可直接译为动宾关系“拿出某些明显站不往脚的证据”。to the effect that是修饰evidence的同位语从句，在此同位语从句中，would eat us up表示一种假设情况，而这种情况是基于if引导的条件句所描述的情形。
【点拨】 1 、jump to sth.表示“匆匆…”，如 jump to a conclusion“匆匆得出结论”。jump to the rescue中jump 要根据语境，翻译出一种“着急”的心态，可译为“立即，迅速”。2、shaky作形容词时，意为“摇晃的，颤抖的，发抖的”或“不坚定的，不可靠的”。本句中后接evidence,因此应译为“不可靠的，站不住脚的”。3、to the effect that 意为“大意是，含义是”。

【分析】复合句。句首but提示，本句与上文构成转折，翻译时要注意体现转折语气。句子主干为have… drawn nearer the point. of admitting…作 point 的后置定语,其中包含that引导的宾语从句，宾语从句中regardless of短语作让步状语。翻译时注意that引导的宾语从句可以加冒号译出，其中regardless of…这一让步状语前置译。
【点拨】l、draw the point“得出这一点”。其中draw是 “得出，推断出（结论）”的意思。2、intrinsic“固有的，内在的,本质的”，在此可根据语境译为“固有的”。3、 presence or absence在此要根据语境翻译为“有无”，而不是字面意思“出席或缺席”。
【译文】但是我们至少已经差不多得出这样一个结论：不管鸟类对我们有无经济利益,生存仍然是它们的固有权利。
