2009 考研英语长难句
1、In the former case the education is incidental; it is natural and important, but it is not the express reason of the association.
【分析】并列句。分号和but连接三个并列分句。整个句子结构简单,顺译即可。
【点拨】1、in the former case指“在前一种情况下”。2、 incidental意为“附带的；偶然的”。3、express在此处用作形容词，意思是“明确的，直接的”。4 、association根据语境应译为“结交，交往”，不可翻译成“协会”、“联盟”、“社团”等。
【译文】对于前者，教育是附带产生的，虽然它极自然也很重要，但是，这并不是人际交往的明显目的。
2、It may be said that the measure of the worth of any so?cial institution is its effect in enlarging and improving experience, but this effect is not a part of its original motive 1.
【分析】并列复合句。but连接两个并列分句。前一分句中形式主语it引导的被动句属于习惯用法，that从句为真正的主语；第二个分句为简单句。翻译时，It may be said that…这类句型一般译为主动语态“我们可以说”、“有人也许说”等。主语从句的主语the measure和表语its effect后都有介词短语作后置定语,可采用逆译法翻译为前置定语。
【点拨】1、measure一词的含义较多，根据词类转换和其后的搭配可翻译成动词“衡量”。 2、social institution 意为“社会机构”。3)motive可译成“动机，目的”，不可译成“原因；动力”。
【译文】虽然我们可以说衡量任何一个社会机构价值的标准是其在丰富和完善人生方面所起的作用，但这种作用并不是我们最初的动机的组成部分。
