【分析】复合句。主句主干为Darwin was convinced that…。that引号宾语从句，其中包含一个not only…but(also)…结构，翻译时可顺译。
【点拨】1、was convinced应译作“深信”。2) taste在这里为可数名词，意为“爱好，志趣”，the loss of these tastes应译作“这些爱好的丧失”或“没有了这些兴趣”，不能译作“味觉的丧失”。3、intellect意为“智力，思维，逻辑，领悟力”。
