两人初次见面时，要说"It is nice to meet you." (幸会。)以示礼貌。 但彼此熟悉开始闲聊之后，道别时则应说"It was 1 nice meeting 2 you." 换言之，"It is nice to meet you."是见面招呼用语，而"It was nice meeting you."则是道别用语。
A: I really enjoyed tonight's party. Thank you, Sarah.
甲：我非常喜欢今晚的宴会。谢谢你，莎拉。
B: You're welcome, Bob. It was nice meeting you.
乙：别客气，鲍伯。很高兴认识你。
A: Nice meeting you, too.
甲：我也很高兴认识你。

(It was) nice talking to you. 很高兴与你谈天。
(It was) my pleasure 3 meeting you. 很荣幸认识你。

与朋友初识道别时，若感觉与对方颇为投缘，可再追加一句："I hope 4 we can get together again before long." (我希望咱们能在不久后再次相聚。)，当然这句话必须以真诚的口吻来说。
