This magnificent ancient capital was built 3000 years ago by the Egyptianpharaoh Ramesses the Great, but long ago the it disappeared. When finallyrediscovered by early archaeologists, it opened up a bizarre puzzle -because when Piramesse was finally found, it was in the wrong place -somewhere Ramesses the Great could not possibly have built itOf all the wonders of ancient Egypt, Ramesses the Great's capital- the cityof Pi-Ramesse, was one of the most spectacular.

Thelost city of Pi-Ramesse became the stuff of legend, until 3,000 years later, its rediscovery opened up one of the most bizarre puzzles in the history ofarcheology. Because when Pi-Ramesse reappeared, it was in the wrong place, aplace where Ramesses the Great could never have built it, a place thatdidn't even exist of the time Ramesses was alive. Across hisempire, he built temples and monuments. But his masterpiece, the placeclosest to his heart, was the city he named after himself, Pi-Ramesse. Avast citadel 2 of white and azure 3, Pi-Ramesse was filled with monumentsdesigned to inspire awe 4 in all who entered.

The city was one of Ramesses's most ambitious creations built on the Nile asa gateway 5 between ancient Egypt and the sea. This was a thriving port, a hubof the ancient world. Up to 300,000 people lived here, the very rich and thevery poor, nobility, craftsmen 6 and slaves. Merchants came from far and wideto trade here.
