Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has discussed the recent face-off between Chinese and Vietnamese ships in the South China Sea with US Secretary of State John Kerry in a phone call.
Wang Yi urged caution in any comments and actions related to the dispute. Speaking at a daily press briefing, spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry 1 Hua Chunying said that Wang Yi urged Kerry to be objective. Tensions rose in the South China Sea last week when Vietnam dispatched six vessels 2 to deliberately 3 ram 4 into Chinese government ships soon after a Chinese oil rig arrived at the site. From May the 3rd to the 7th, 36 Vietnamese vessels, including armed ships, reportedly rammed 5 Chinese vessels more than 170 times. Vietnam also placed many fishing nets and large obstacles in the water, posing threats to navigation.
