【时间旅行者的妻子】31

The T-shirt is warm empty cloth in my hands. I sigh, and walk upstairs to ponder 1 the mummies for a while by myself. My young self will be home now, climbing into bed. I remember, I remember. I woke up in the morning and it was all a wonderful dream. Mom laughed and said that time travel sounded fun, and she wanted to try it, too.
　That was the first time.
　
FIRST DATE, TWO
　Friday, September 23, 1977 (Henry is 36, Clare is 6)
　
HENRY: I’m in the Meadow 2, waiting. I wait slightly outside the clearing, naked, because the clothes Clare keeps for me in a box under a stone are not there; the box isn’t there either, so I am thankful that the afternoon is fine, early September, perhaps, in some unidentified year. I hunker down in the tall grass. I consider. The fact that there is no box full of clothes means that I have arrived in a time before Clare and I have met. Perhaps Clare isn’t even born yet. This has happened before, and it’s a pain; I miss Clare and I spend the time hiding naked in the Meadow, not daring to show myself in the neighborhood of Clare’s family. I think longingly 3 of the apple trees at the western edge of the Meadow. At this time of year there ought to be apples, small and sour and munched 4 by deer, but edible 5. I hear the screen door slam and I peer 6 above the grass. A child is running, pell mell, and as it comes down the path through the waving grass my heart twists and Clare bursts into the clearing.
　She is very young. She is oblivious 7; she is alone. She is still wearing her school uniform, a hunter green jumper with a white blouse and knee socks with penny loafers, and she is carrying a Marshall Field’s shopping bag and a beach towel.

      　　"对！"他把奥里奥放在椅子扶手上，我们开始慢慢翻看那些鸟。图片上的鸟儿可比楼下展厅玻璃瓶里的标本更加栩栩如生。   
      　　"这是大蓝鹭，它很大，比火烈鸟还要大。你见过蜂鸟么？"   
      　　"我今天刚看到过几只！"   
      　　"就在博物馆里？"   
      　　"嗯！"   
      　　"活的蜂鸟才叫神奇呢--就像一架超小型直升机，翅膀振动得快极了，简直就像是一层薄雾……"我们每翻过一页纸都像在铺床，无比巨大的书页缓慢地上下挥动。亨利专心致志地站着，等待每一页后的新惊喜，沙丘鹤、黑鸭、海雀、北美黑啄木鸟，他都轻声发出快乐的惊呼。当我们看到最后一页插图版的"雪颊鸟"时，他弯腰碰了碰书，小心地触摸彩雕图页。我看着他，又看了看书，想起当时，这本书、这时刻，这是我爱上的第一本书，当时我真想爬到它里面，美美地睡上一觉呢。 
        
      　　"你累了么？"   
      　　"嗯。"   
      　　"我们回去吧。"   
      　　"好。"   
      　　我合上《美洲鸟类》，把它放回书橱里，并让它保持翻开在火烈鸟这一页上，然后锁好橱子。亨利跳下椅子，开始吃他的奥里奥。我把垫毯放回参考咨询台，再把椅子归位。亨利关上灯，我们便离开了图书馆。 
        
      　　我们一路闲逛，一边轻松地谈论那些飞禽走兽，一边咀嚼奥里奥。亨利介绍了妈妈、爸爸，告诉我金太正在教他做番茄肉末面；还有布兰达，我都几乎忘了我童年最好的朋友，她再过三个月就要和家人一起搬到佛罗里达州的坦帕去了。我们站在"灌木人"前面，那是只传奇银背大猩猩的填充标本，它站在底楼大厅的大理石座上，气势汹汹地看着我们。突然，亨利叫出声来，他踉跄地冲到前面，想走到我这边，我赶紧抓住他，但他已经消失了，只有一件温暖的T恤空空地留在我手中。我叹了口气，走上楼，面对木乃伊独自愣了好一会儿。儿时的我应该到家了吧，也许正在往床上爬。我记得，我都记得。然后我在早晨醒来，一切就像一场美好的梦。妈妈笑着对我说，时间旅行听上去真有意思，她也想试试。

      　　一九七七年九月二十三日（亨利三十六岁，克莱尔六岁）   
      　　亨利：我在草坪上等。克莱尔为我准备的那盒衣服并不在石头下面，连盒子也不见了，所以我只能赤裸着身子，等在空地旁边。很庆幸，这是个明媚的午后，也许是某年九月初的光景。我蹲在高高的草丛中，想：这是个老地方，却没有装满衣服的盒子，说明在进入这个日期之前，我和克莱尔并没相遇，也许克莱尔还没有出生吧。这种情况以前也发生过，结果很惨。我想着克莱尔，但又不敢在她家的街坊里出没，只能光着身子躲在草丛里。我想念草坪西边的苹果园，这个时节，那儿一定已经硕果累累了，小小的、酸酸的，甚至被野鹿啃过几口的苹果，都能吃。突然门"砰"地一关，我从草丛中探头张望，一个孩子正匆匆忙忙地奔跑，当这个孩子穿过摇摆的草丛，沿着小路跑近的时候，我一阵激动，出现在这片空地上的是克莱尔。 
        
      　　她很小。她一无所知。她一个人。她还穿着那套学生装：军绿色的背心裙，白色上衣，齐膝的袜子和平底鞋。她拎着马费百货公司的购物袋和一块沙滩浴巾。
