bark up the wrong tree 源于美国西部拓荒时期，拓荒者训练狗将猎物叼回来，动物为了逃命往往会爬到树上去。狗有时会一时糊涂，没看清楚猎物上了哪颗树，对着一棵没有动物的树乱叫。这个俚语比喻：“错怪某人，攻击错了目标”。因此，当美国人说"You're barking up the wrong tree!"时，他/她要表达的意思就是:"You are accusing me wrongly!"、"You are waking up the wrong passenger!"。
