2011考研英语长难句
1 Alien's contribution was to take an assumption we all share — that because we are not robots we therefore control our thoughts — and reveal its erroneous nature.
【分析】多重复合句。句子的主干是Allen's attribu?tion was to take an assumption …and reveal its errone? ous nature。we all share是省略引导词的定语从句，修饰先行词assumption；破折号当中是修饰assumption的同位语从句。翻译时注意短定语从句可以译为主谓宾结构；同位语从句可以加冒号处理,也可以前置；被隔开 的并列的不定式表语可以顺接翻译。
【点拨】 1、take an assumption 因为与 reveal its errone?ous nature承接，因此译为“研究了这一假说”。2)erroneous nature意为“错误的本质”。
【译文】我们每个人都认同这样的看法:我们自己不是机器人，因此能够控制自己的思想；爱伦的贡献在于他研究了这一假说，并揭示了其错误的本质。

【分析】复合句。主句的主干为we are continually faced with a question,冒号后的部分可似看作question的同位语;while引导让步状语从句。翻译时注意让步状语从句顺译，主句中的被动语态翻译成主动语态，同位语从句中指示代词需根据上下文明确翻译出来。
【点拨】1、sustain—词的含义较多，根据其后的搭配翻 译成“维持，持续”。2、conscious mind意为“有意识的思想”。
【译文】虽然我们或许只通过有意识的思想就能维持这种控制的幻觉，但事实上，我们却总是面临一个问题:我们为什么不能让自己去做这件事情或去实现那个目标呢？
