The fire grew hotter and hotter. Brother Rabbit began to squirm. 火越烧越旺，兔子弟弟开始扭动身体。
"Oh, oh, "he cried, "my fur and whiskers! I am roasting. I am going to burn up!" 哦！哦！他叫道，我的毛和胡子啊，烤死我了，我快被烤焦了。
But as the fire grew hotter, it began to melt the Tar 1 Baby, and Brother Rabbit pulled one of his hands loose. 随着火烧得越来越热，柏油娃娃开始融化了，兔子弟弟挣开了一只手。
"Oh," he thought, "the Tar Baby is melting. Soon I'll be free." 他想，嗯，柏油娃娃正在融化，不久我就能解脱了。
Just then Brother Fox came and put more wood on the fire. 狐狸哥哥过来了，他往火里添了更多的木材。
"How is that, Brother Rabbit? Is the fire big enough to roast a rabbit?" 怎么样啊？兔子弟弟，这火够大吗？能烤熟一只兔子吗？
Brother Rabbit stopped squirming and sat very still. 兔子弟弟停止了扭动，坐在那一动不动。
He did not want Brother Fox to see that one hand was loose. 他不想让狐狸哥哥看到他一只手已经脱开了。
Then he said in a big, brave voice, "Do you call this a fire? 于是他高声说道，你把这个叫火？
Oh, Brother Fox, you will have to build a bigger fire than this to scare me!" 啊，狐狸哥哥，你拿比这更大的火来吓吓我吧！
Brother Fox was a little surprised. "Well, then," he said, "you shall have a bigger fire, Brother Rabbit. 狐狸哥哥有点惊讶。好吧！他说，我会给你个更大的火，兔子弟弟，
You are only scared now, but in a few minutes you will be roasted." 你现在只是害怕，一会儿你就会被烤熟的。
And away he went to get more wood to build a bigger fire. 于是狐狸哥哥又去取更多的木材，准备把火烧的更旺些。
As soon as he was gone, Brother Rabbit began to squirm. 狐狸哥哥刚一离开，兔子弟弟就开始动了起来。
The tar was melting more and more. 柏油融化的越来越多。
Soon Brother Rabbit pulled both hands away from the Tar Baby. 不一会儿兔子弟弟的双手都从柏油娃娃身上抽了出来。
Before Brother Fox came back, Brother Rabbit pulled himself free and went hopping 2 away into the woods. 没等到狐狸哥哥回来，兔子弟弟就已经完全挣脱，跳进树林里了。
Brother Fox did not have roast rabbit for his dinner. 狐狸哥哥晚饭没有烤兔肉了。
When he came back to his fire, he found nothing but a melting tar baby. 他回到火堆边的时候，发现只留下个融化的柏油娃娃。
