Egypt’s Election Commission has extended polling for the country’s presidential election by one day. According to the state-run MENA news agency, voting will now enter a third day on Wednesday.
The decision followed a lower-than-expected turnout in the two-day vote that was originally due to end on Tuesday at 10 p.m. local time.
Egyptians began voting on Monday at 9 a.m. local time, in the first polls since former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted 1 by the military.
Ex-army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who led Morsi’s overthrow 2, is poised 3 to score an easy win over his sole rival in the race, leftist leader Hamdeen Sabahy, who came third in the 2012 presidential election.
About 54 million Egyptians are eligible 4 to cast their votes at polling stations in the country’s 27 provinces. Official results are expected on June 5.
