During World War 1 II, a lot of young women in Britain 2 were in the army 3. Joan Phillips was 4 one of them. She worked in a big camp 5, and of course 6 met a lot of men, officers 8 and soldiers 9

One evening she met Captain 10 Humphreys at a dance. He said 11 to her, "I‘m going 12 abroad 13 tomorrow, but I‘d be very happy if we could 14 write to each other." Joan agreed 15, and they wrote 16 for several 17 months.
Then his letters stopped, but she received 18 one from another officer 7, telling her that he had 19 been wounded 20 and was in a certain 21 army hospital in England.
Joan went there and said to the matron, "I‘ve come to visit Captain Humphreys."
"Only relatives 22 are allowed 23 to visit patients 24 here," the matron said.
"Oh, that‘s all right," answered Joan. "I‘m his sister."
"I‘m very pleased 25 to meet you," the matron said, "I‘m his mother!"
