Part 1 Mike is Wasting Time 麦克在浪费时间

Dialogue Script 1

Paula: We've been here for two hours, and we haven't finished a thing yet.
Mike: Look, I wrote the story, so I know what to do.
Paula: But you're not telling people their roles.
Mike: I'm resting now. I'll direct everybody in a minute.
Paula: We have to practice or else we won't win like the last three years in a row.
Mike: Whatever. I'm going for a drink.
Paula: Darn it, Mike! We have to get this done! We don't have much time left.

Look, I wrote the story, so I know what to do.

tell people their roles,给大家讲解每个人的角色安排,这是导演该做的工作。

3. in a minute表示“很快,马上”,例如:Our guests will be here in a minute! Just a minute! Let me put your tie straight.

4. Paula劝Mike说We have to practice or else we won't win like the last three years in a row. 用一个对话来做例子,---You'd better finish your soup, or else...---Or else what?

但是如果Paula说完...won't win之后,停顿一下再说like the last three years in a row,这样的意思正好相反,表示“会像之前那样连续三年没有赢过”。

I'm going for a drink. I think I'll go for the fruit salad. You're going to keep snakes! Whatever next?

Darn it! 该死!是Damn 1 it!

Dialogue Script 2

Jim: I have no idea what to do.
Paula: Mike needs to get off his butt 2 and start giving us direction.
Jim: Why aren't you directing it? You're much better at it than Mike.
Paula: Mike wrote it, so he feels like it belongs to him.
Jim: That's stupid. My grandparents are coming to the show.
Paula: Maybe he'll come back and do something useful for a change.
Jim: I don't want to disappoint my grandma. She's looking forward to this play.

I have no idea what to do. I don't know what to do. I have no idea what you're talking about.

get off someone's butt,表示“某人该起身有所行动”。 Get off your butts 3 and do some work!

I gave him full directions to enable him to find the train station. 这里用的是be good at something的比较级形式,be better at something。

Dialogue Script 3

Paula: Mike, if you don't start directing the play, I will.
Mike: I am directing the play. You're just not listening.
Paula: You're the one that's not listening. Nobody has a clue what to do.
Mike: Just mind your own business.
Paula: I'm trying to keep this play from becoming a disaster.
Mike: If you'd just listen to me read the storyline...
Paula: Not again!
Mike: As many times as it takes. Now go get the costume.
Paula: You can't boss people around!
Mike: I'm the director, so you have to do what I say.
Paula: Then why don't you direct?
Mike: Because you're getting in the way. So shut up.
Paula: You're not getting rid of me that easily.
Mike: If you want to quit, just say so. We don't need you anyway.
Paula: I helped you right from the start.
Mike: Keep quiet until it's your turn to speak. Got it?

I will. I will direct the play.

Nobody has a clue what to do. 那么这里的have a clue to do something也表示“知道该做什么”的意思,跟上面的have an idea to do something和know to do something一样。

Just mind your own business. 我们用一个对话做例子,---How old were you when your parents got divorced? ---Mind your own business! I'm trying to keep this play from becoming a disaster.

比如说,---So, you still won't tell me who your girlfriend is. ---Not again! I'm tired of this question.

As many times as it takes. You can't boss people around! He's always bossing his wife around.

Because you're getting in the way. get in the way表示“碍别人的事,阻碍某人做某事”,跟stand in someone's way 差不多。 If you want to study music, we won't stand in your way.

7. 既然get in the way 表示“碍别人的事,阻碍某人做某事”,那么我们就可以用get out of the way表示“别碍事,摆脱阻碍”。If you don't want to join us, get out of the way. Mike还让Paula闭嘴,Shut up! Shut your mouth up!

You're not getting rid of me that easily. be /get rid of someone or something He was such a nuisance! I'm glad to be rid of him. We ordered three pizzas and now we can't get rid of them.

说到这个quit,有一个习语跟我们上面说的be/get rid of sb or sth差不多,就是be quit of sb/sth,也表示“摆脱,脱离某人某物”,例如,I want to be quit of the responsibility. You're well quit of him.

Keep quiet until it's your turn to speak. Got it? Keep quite.

Part 2 Mike Screwed It Up 麦克搞砸了

Dialogue Script 1

Paula: You see, Mike? If you want this play to work, let me take over.
Mike: It's either me as director, or no play.
Paula: You're on some kind of weird 4 power trip, Mike.
Mike: Those are your choices. Take it or leave it.
Paula: All right. You leave me no choice. I'm off the play.
Mike: Good, now I can get things done.
Paula: I doubt it. I'm the only one that knows how to direct. Without me, everybody will quit. I'm out of here.

比如说,Did the cleanser work? My plan worked.

Would you like me to take over for a while? Peter will take over as managing director when Bill retires. When she fell ill her daughter took over the business from her.

It's either me as director, or no play. Mike, you're on some kind of weird power trip.

Those are your choices. Take it or leave it. Take it or leave it. Take it or leave it. 我们用一个对话来做例子,---This is my final offer. Take it or leave it. ---OK, I'll take it.

5. Paula说,You leave me no choice. I'm off the play. You leave me no choice.就是说I have no choice. Good, now I can get things done.

6. Paula可不确定,I doubt it. 跟I don't know. 或者I'm not sure. I'm out of here. 。

Dialogue Script 2

Paula: So I hear all your actors quit.
Mike: Yeah. And the reporter of the town paper is going to say I screwed it up.
Paula: So what are you going to do?
Mike: Can I give the play to you?
Paula: Sorry, Mike. I'm busy.
Mike: Paula, I know this is my fault. I apologize.
Paula: You shouldn't apologize to me. You should apologize to everybody else.
Mike: I know I wasted everybody's time. Can't you just give it one more shot?
Paula: All right. I'll do it. But I want full power as director.
Mike: You got it. I can't really direct anyway.
Paula: And I want you to apologize to everybody else for wasting their time as well. Mike: Ah, come on. I don't need to do that.
Paula: Do it, or I'll walk.
Mike: OK, OK, I'll do it.
Paula: And Mike, let's not let this ruin our friendship.
Mike: Sure. No problem.
Paula: Now let's get down to business...

I was trying to help, but I screwed up again. Don't let Peter organize the trip; he'll screw everything up.

apologize to someone for something,因为某事向某人道歉,例如,I apologized to Sarah for not being able to show up on time.

give it a shot,意思就是“试一试”,那么give it one more shot 就是说“再试一次了”。 You got it.

Do it, or I'll walk.

let's not let this ruin our friendship. Let's get down to business. 相当于Let's get started.
