John Hancock这个俚语源自美国独立战争时期，据说在1776年北美大陆会议讨论《独立宣言》时，约翰·汉考克时任大会主席。在《独立宣言》签字时，约翰·汉考克首先签名，他的签名比杰弗逊和富兰克林的签名还要大。后人就用他的名字作为“签名”的代名词收进词典，并被广泛应用。因此，当美国人说"Please put your John Hancock right here."时，他/她要表达的意思就是:"Please sign your name here."、"May I have your signature here?"。
