[00:13.04]Hi,Yang Yang

[00:14.32]Thank you for your e-mail.

[00:16.47]I'm really happy that we met each other

[00:18.74]on the Internet.

[00:20.39]How are your English classes going?

[00:23.00]Have you learned 1 a lot?

[00:25.16]In your last e-mail,

[00:27.23]you asked me if students in Canada

[00:29.28]learn a foreign language.

[00:31.24]This depends on where you live in the country

[00:33.73]and your school.

[00:35.44]I live in Vancouver,

[00:37.38]and here most students start learning 2

[00:39.54]a foreign language

[00:40.85]when they are in primary school.

[00:43.46]Others start in junior 3 high school.

[00:45.70]Because both English and French

[00:48.45]are official 4 languages in Canada,

[00:51.32]most English-speaking students learn French,

[00:54.60]but you can learn other languages, too.

[00:57.71]In my school you can choose either Chinese

[01:00.23]or French, or both..

[01:02.75]I chose to learn Chinese.

[01:05.24]I have a lot of Chinese friends

[01:07.19]and I really like Chinese culture.

[01:10.68]My younger sister is also learning Chinese.

[01:14.18]This way we can talk to each other in Chinese

[01:18.28]and our parents won't understand!

[01:22.34]there are also a lot of language schools..

[01:25.72]If someone wants to learn a foreign language,

[01:28.87]he can go to these schools

[01:30.45]after regular classes.

[01:32.92]Most language schools offer Chinese classes.

[01:36.51]Also,many Chinese parents send their children

[01:39.50]to Chinese language schools

[01:41.75]so they won't forget their native 5 language.

[01:45.01]You told me that learning English is difficult

[01:48.22]I think learning any foreign language

[01:50.67]is difficult.

[01:52.17]Chinese is also difficult for me,

[01:54.83]but we shouldn't give up.

[01:56.77]Next time I send you e-mail

[01:58.52]I'll try to write in Chinese

[02:00.80]and you can reply in English.

[02:03.55]This way, we'll help each other

[02:05.94]in learning a foreign language!

[02:07.90]I'd also like to know

[02:09.36]what it is like to learn English in China.

[02:12.60]Could you tell me about it?

[02:14.35]I'm looking forward to reading 6 your e-mail.

[02:17.12]Cheers.

[02:18.21]Paula

[02:24.34]Exercise 2.1

[02:27.34]Native peoples have been living in Canada

[02:30.14]for thousands of years,

[02:32.13]but the French were the first Europeans

[02:34.55]to arrive in Canada in the 1500s.

[02:37.86]About 100 years later,

[02:40.06]the British arrived ,and both nations 7,

[02:43.23]the French and the British,

[02:45.48]lived peacefully for about 100 years.

[02:49.10]Then , in 1745,

[02:51.60]the British took some French land,

[02:54.14]and both nations fought against each other

[02:56.70]for the right to rule Canada.

[02:59.20]The French lost ,

[03:00.85]and in 1763 Canada became British.

[03:05.35]Because of the history of both the French

[03:07.61]and the British,

[03:08.91]today Canada has two official languages:

[03:12.55]French and English.

[03:14.57]About 24% of the population speak French

[03:18.67]as a native language and another
