[02:24.67]No one knows for sure how the Moai came to be.

[02:30.60]Some think that people from Peru 7 made the Moai thousands of years ago.

[02:38.43]Others think that aliens 8 from space made the Moai

[02:44.88]and left them as some kind of message.

[02:49.64]The island also has many kinds of rock carvings 9

[02:55.39]written in a kind of language that exists 10 only in this part of the world.

[03:02.94]And this written language appeared many years ago,

[03:14.46]It is thought that at one time,

[04:04.53]then came people from other countries to the island

[04:09.57]bringing illnesses that the islanders 14 had never had before.

[04:15.76]Many more people died and by the 1800s

[04:21.62]there were only a little more than 100 islanders alive.

[04:27.68]After Easter Island became part of Chile in 1888,the population increased.

[04:35.75]Now there are about 2,000 people living on the island.

[04:41.50]  People have started raising the Moai again,

[04:45.86]even thought no one knows why they are there.

[04:50.93]Many people from all over the world come to see the Moai,

[04:56.67]because they are such a mystery.

[05:01.04]No matter what the reason,

[05:04.67]whether they were set up by people from Peru or by aliens from space,

[05:11.80]they are still looking out over the ocean--mysteriously!

[05:21.18]Lesson 23

[05:24.52]1. Read and act

[05:28.99]What are you doing with that,that....What is that?

[05:34.45]It's a kind of radio for sending messages out into space.

[05:40.40]Why do you want to do that?

[05:44.24]What if aliens put up the Moai to send us a message?

[05:49.70]I'd like to let them know that we want to talk to them too.

[05:54.85]Do you really think that there are aliens about there?

[05:59.58]Well,I'm not sure.

[06:03.23]But what if there are? Then they may get my message.

[06:08.59]Well,yeah. By the way, what is your message?

[06:14.26]"Earth is a cool place!

[07:24.42]  They next class began.

[07:44.14]Yesterday she didn't see the note in her desk.

[07:49.73]This morning, she was the first one in the class.

[07:55.38]There was no one around,so how did the note get in her desk?

[08:02.22]After class she asked Li Lei about the note.

[08:07.68]He said that he hadn't written the note, either.

[08:12.85]  Rachel wasn't sure if she should go after class to meet this person.

[08:19.41]Maybe it wasn't safe.

[08:23.46]At lunch she showed all her friends the note.

[08:28.92]They all said they hadn't written the note.

[08:33.91]They all tried to think of who wrote the note

[08:38.77]and why the person wanted to meet Rachel.
