Cubans are welcoming Pope Francis to be on island nation. After his plane touched down in Havana he talked to an enthusiastic crowd that gathered at the airport. Cuban president Raul Castro was also on hand to greet him. NPR's SJ travelled with the Pope from Roman to Cuban and has this report. After taking off from Havana, Pepe Francis came to the back of the plan to meet the media and speak of peace. 'I believe the world has a great thirst for peace', he said. There is this great of wave migrants fleeing wars, fleeing death and seeking life. Pope said he was very moved meeting one of the families sheltered by the Vatican parishes, a Syrian family whose faces he said showed the pain they've suffered. He spoke 1 of the need to build little bridges that one by one can become the big bridge of peace. On arrival in Havana, Francis told president Raul Castro that Cuba uniquely faces all directions. It's a key between north and south, east and west, a place of encounter for all peoples.SJ, NPR news, Havana.
A crowd of people interrupted New Hampshire's state democratic party convention today. They are demanding more debates. The national party chair has limited the presidential candidates to six debates. And as NPR's TK reports a lot of the party's faithful are not happy about it.Democratic Party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultztook the stage planning to give a * speech criticizing Republican candidates. And she did. But she was interrupted more than once by hacklers chanting 'More debates. More debates' at times drowning her out. 'My friends, what's more important. Drawing a contrast with Republicans or arguing about debates? Let's focus on our mission and the task at hand. Enough is enough!' There are six democratic debates scheduled, far fewer than the Republicans, with the first one still a month away. Those chanting were mostly supporters of presidential candidates Martin Bernie Sanders and O’Malley . TK,NPR news, Manchester, New Hampshire.
President Obama has called on Congress to pass a budget by the end of the month. Democrats 2 are ready to sit down and negotiate with Republicans right now. But it should be over legitimate 3 issues like how much do we invest in education, job training and infrastructure 4, not unrelated ideological 5 issues like Planned Parenthood. Speaking in his weekly address, Obama said congress should pass a budget that reverses previous sequester 6 cuts and avoids of federal government shutdown. But some conservatives say they will not vote for a spending blueprint 7 that includes money for Planned Parenthood. Firefighters in California are bracing 8 for a * heat to return this weekend. The concerned major gains made against two massive blazes could be undone 9. The valley fire, one of the most destructive in state history is 48 percent contained. Five people have died in the fire. About 1000 homes have been destroyed. This is NPR news.
Increased uncertainty 10 about the global economy and financial turmoil 11 kept the Federal Reserve from raising short-term interests rates this week. But SB of Market News International reports one Fed policy-maker is taking strong exception. Richmond Federal Reserve Bank president Jeffrey Lacker, alone decenter against leaving the key federal funds rate near zero says the Fed's policy-making Federal Open Market Committee should have raised the rate a quarter of a percentage point. He says that would have still rates exceptionally low and would have recognized the the substantial progress the economy has made. Pinpointing 12 to faster household's spending and falling on unemployment Lacker said it is not appropriate to keep rates so low and warn delaying rate hikes could have adverse 13 outcomes. He considered inflation is below the Fed's two percent target but argued that it was transitory. For NPR news, I'm SB.
