[09:53.14]After coming to China,Lumsden Quan

[09:58.28]found that his family was like a tall tree with long roots.

[10:03.35]Lumsden is just one young overseas 4 Chinese

[10:08.68]who has come to his ancestor's homeland as a part of the"In Search of Roots" summer camp program

[10:16.12]The program started in 1980

[10:20.07] and is organized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Guangdong Province.

[10:26.83]So far,it has brought thousands of overseas Chinese students to China

[10:33.68]to explore the roots of their families.

[10:37.83]The young people are usually between 16 and 25 years old,

[10:44.08]and mostly come from the United 5 States,Canada,the Netherlands,

[10:51.05]Austria 6,the United Kingdom,Germany,and Indonesia 7.

[10:58.00]Many have never been to China before and can hardly speak any Chinese.

[11:04.97]The students mainly visit areas in Guangdong province.

[11:10.33]The two-week camp has activities like studying Chinese culture,sightseeing,

[11:26.89]Visiting their ancestors'villages is one of the highlights 10 of the journey.

[12:08.48]"The 'In Search of Roots'program is amazing.

[12:13.52]Thanks to the program,I understand the beginning of who I am

[12:20.00]and I realize that I am culturally and ancestrally rooted in China."

[12:26.24]Another American,Susan Brim,said,

[12:31.20]"Going to my grandfather's grave 13 was a powerful 14 experience.

[12:36.95]I feel like I have done something that wasn't importhant to me before."

[12:42.70]Chinese historian 15 Mai Liqian and the team leader of the American camp,Zheng Guohe,

[12:50.64]believe strongly in the program.

[12:54.48]They say the purpose of the trip is to clear any doubts

[12:59.76]that young Chinese living abroad have about who they are
