Hot Issue Reports
Chinese Trawler Captain Back Home
The Chinese trawler captain Zhan Qixiong has arrived safely in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province by a chartered plane after he was illegally detained by Japan.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry 4 has issued a fresh statement, expressing "strong protest" against Japan over the illegal detention 5 of the Chinese trawler and fishermen.
The statement says such an act seriously infringed 6 upon China's territorial 7 sovereignty and violated the human rights of Chinese citizens.
It reiterates 8 that China possesses undisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and surrounding islets.
The statement stresses that Japan's detention, investigation 9 or any form of judiciary measures for the Chinese trawler and fishermen are unlawful and invalid 10.
It urges Japan to make apology and compensation for the incident.
The statement also says the two sides should resolve the problems of Sino-Japanese relationship through dialogue and consultation 11 so as to maintain the overall situation of bilateral relations.
On Sept. 7th, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands. On the following day, the Japan Coast Guard seized the Chinese trawler and detained the trawler's captain and 14 fishermen on board.
The Japanese side freed the 14 fishermen and the boat last week, but continued to hold the captain. China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally 12 release the Chinese captain to avoid further damaging bilateral ties.
Premier Wen Meets Obama, Comments on RMB Exchange Rate
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has met with U.S. President Barack Obama in New York, focusing on bilateral ties and international issues and calling for more cooperation between the two countries. Prior to their meeting, the Chinese premier refuted claims that China has been artificially keep the Yuan undervalued to give its exporters an upper hand over their foreign counterparts.
US walks out on speech by Iranian president at UN GA
The US delegation walked out of the UN speech of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York after he speculated that Americans were behind the September 11 terror attacks.
The American delegates left without hearing Ahmadinejad's theory that the attack was the work of "a terrorist group, but the American government supported and took advantage of the situation."
The Iranian leader also spoke 13 of threats to burn the Quran by a small American church in Florida to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Although that church backed down, several copycat burnings were posted on the Internet and broadcast in the Muslim world.
"They burned the Quran to burn all these truths and good judgments 14, however, the truth cannot be burned. Quran is eternal because God and truth are everlasting 15. This act and any other act which widens the gap and distances between nations is evil. We must widely avoid playing into the hands of Satan."
Ahmadinejad also briefly 16 touched on the four sets of sanctions imposed on his country by the United Nations over Tehran's refusal to stop enriching uranium. He accused the United States of building up its nuclear arsenal 17 instead of dismantling 18 it and reiterated 19 his call for a nuclear-free world.
Mark Kornblau, spokesman of the US Mission to the world body, issued a statement within moments of the speech. Rather than representing the hopes and goodwill 20 of the Iranian people, he said Ahmadinejad had again chosen to spout 21 vile 22 conspiracy 23 theories.
Red Cross from two Koreas hold talks on more family reunions
South Korean Red Cross officials crossed the border into North Korea on Friday to work out details for next month's reunions of families separated by war more than a half-century ago.
The meeting on Friday in the North's border city of Kaesong comes a week after the two sides failed to decide on a venue 24 for or the scale of the reunions.
Kim Eyi-do, leader of South Korean Red Cross delegation, told reporters before passing through security checks to cross the border that the venue issue will be the major topic of discussion.
"We will mainly concentrate on making an agreement on the venue issue on which we had different views from the last meeting. We will finalize 25 the meeting today and try our best to hold the split families' reunion as soon as possible."
The two sides last held reunions in late 2009.
The reunions would be a sign of efforts to improve ties after relations soured following the March sinking of a South Korean warship 26 that Seoul blamed on Pyongyang.
North Korea has denied any involvement in the sinking.
UK's opposition 27 Labour party to unveil new leader
Britain's opposition Labour party will unveil its new leader on Saturday, four months after Gordon Brown resigned in the aftermath of his General Election defeat.
Four men and one woman are vying 28 for the top job but it's turned into a tale of two brothers, the front-runners being former Foreign Secretary David Miliband and his younger brother Ed, the former Climate Change Secretary.
Despite rumors 29 of a soap-opera-style family rivalry 30, David Miliband says nothing could tear him and his brother apart:
"We're determined 31 to make sure that family comes before politics, and I don't think there's any chance that politics is going to get in the way."
The two represent very different wings of the party. While David was an ally of Tony Blair and seeks to continue Blair's centrist party legacy 32, Ed was a protege of Gordon Brown and wants to return Labour to its traditional left-leaning roots.
Space crew's return to earth delayed after false alarm over seals
A problem with a docking port on the International Space Station has delayed three crew members' return home by a day.
Russians Alexander Skvortsov and Mikhail Korniyenko, and NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson climbed into a Soyuz capsule for the descent on Friday, but during the undocking procedure, on-board computer signaled a technical problem with the hermetic, or airtight, seals.
Russia's Roscosmos space agency chief Anatoly Perminoc said it turned out to be a false alarm.
"The preliminary analysis based on technical expertise 33 shows that the on-board computer received a false signal that the hermetic seal was missing, after the door between the capsule and the space station was closed. We have carried out all necessary checks today on the hermetic sealing of the station and they show that the station is sealed."
The departure and descent were postponed 34 until tomorrow.
The three crew members boarded the space station on April the 4th after flying up together in the Soyuz TMA-18, which will also be used for their return to earth.
U.S. researchers keen on elephant seals
Northern elephant seals migrate to California's A?o Nuevo State Reserve twice a year--in the winter to mate and give birth, and in the warmer seasons to molt 35. Researchers observe the seals during their short interludes on land to place radio tags on them, which allow researchers to track the animals' movements and measure diving depths.
