Lesson54 A Necklace 1
Helen and Mary are both studying English at University 2. Helen is very good at throwing the javelin 3 and Mary is very good at running 4.
One evening they went to practice 5 their sports in the university grounds 6, and when they had 7 finished 8, they walked part 9 of the way home together, but at one corner they had to say goodbye because their homes were in different directions 10.
"Be careful on your way home," Mary said 11 to Helen. "I would 12 be happier if your houses were nearer."
"Me too," answered Helen.
The next morning Helen and Mary met at an English class, and Helen said to Mary, "Do you know what happened to me after I left you yesterday evening?"
"No, " answered Mary anxiously 13. "What happened to you?"
"Well," Helen said, "a thief 14 came 15 up behind me and robbed 16 me of my necklace."
"I wish I"d been there," Mary said angrily. "I"d have run after the man and I"d probably 17 have caught him. But what are you going 18 to do now? Have you been to the police 19?"
"No," Helen answered with a smile.
"Why not?" Mary asked in surprise.
"Because," Helen answered, "when the man pulled 20 my necklace, I turned round suddenly 21 and put my hand out to try to stop him.
I caught his necklace and pulled it off 22 him. My necklace was 23 a cheap one which was not real 24 silver 25; but his is made 26 of real gold! If I went to the police, I might 27 have to give it to him."
