[00:01.20]The day before the election
[00:03.07]was when things started to get really complicated.
[00:06.58]There’s your culprit.
[00:08.16]Linda had asked me to stop by on my way to school
[00:11.46]to help her out with a little plumbing problem.
[00:15.00]Did you know Dave’s a bed-wetter?
[00:17.71]No. No, I... I didn’t know that.
[00:21.26]All his life. He’s tried everything.
[00:26.80]Is that still running clear?
[00:29.47]Yeah.
[00:30.52]Better let it run for a while.
[00:32.27]OK.
[00:34.19]Oh, wait.
[00:36.48]Here. This one’s clean.
[00:43.11]I guess you better get to work, huh?
[00:45.07]You’re gonna be late.
[00:46.66]Yeah.
[00:58.75]Thank you, Jim.
[01:13.60]It was something that just happened.
[01:15.89]Neither of us expected it.
[01:17.90]Neither of us planned it.
[01:19.61]But once we started, we knew there was no turning back.
[01:23.07]It was a miracle.
[01:26.70]Oh, Jim.
[01:39.00]Hey, take me to that motel,
[01:41.59]like you wanted.
[01:42.76]Now?
[01:44.42]Um, come by after school.
[01:46.18]I’ll leave Darryl with a sitter.
[01:47.68]Oh. 3:25.
[01:50.51]OK, 3:25.
[02:01.32]What had blossomed
[02:02.44]between Linda and me was too real,
[02:04.32]too powerful to deny.
[02:06.15]For the first time in years,
[02:07.82]I felt free and alive.
[02:15.25]Hiya, Jim.
[02:37.98]It’s not fair, it’s just not fair.
[02:40.65]I just don’t think somebody
[02:42.11]would do something like that on purpose.
[02:43.86]It must be some sort of mistake,
[02:46.11]like a maintenance thing.
[02:48.11]Jim, where the hell have you been?
[02:51.07]Nowhere. I... I don’t have any classes
[02:54.41]till second period.
[02:55.37]Well, I tried you at home,
[02:56.50]and we’ve got a situation here.
[02:58.33]If Paul loses this election tomorrow,
[02:59.71]there has to be another one
[03:00.96]with posters.
[03:02.17]Somebody tore down their posters.
[03:04.09]Those posters cost us a lot of money,
[03:05.67]and there’s no time to make any more.
[03:06.88]All right, we’ll get to the bottom of it.
[03:08.30]We still have some extra ones, don’t we?
[03:10.05]Maybe we could just use those.
[03:11.39]It was Tammy.
[03:12.34]That’s who it was.
[03:13.30]Oh, no. Hey, like I said,
[03:15.31]she just wouldn’t do something like that.
[03:16.85]Well, that speech that she gave,
[03:18.52]you know, it was pretty...
[03:19.81]It was out there.
[03:21.90]But we’ll get to the bottom of it.
[03:23.23]I want you two to go back,
[03:25.57]I want you to focus on your studies.
[03:27.48]Mr. McAllister will handle the whole thing.
[03:30.28]Right, Jim?
[03:32.32]What’s that? Oh, yeah. Sure, yeah, you bet.
[03:44.34]Tracy.
[03:49.47]Tracy, come on in.
[03:52.43]Close the door behind you.
[04:00.35]Have a seat.
[04:06.07]I guess you know why you’re here.
[04:11.70]If it’s about the posters,
[04:12.99]I think it’s awful.
[04:14.20]I think it’s a travesty.
[04:16.03]Travesty, huh?
[04:17.45]Well, that’s interesting,
[04:20.66]because I think you did it.
[04:22.92]What?
[04:26.46]Are you accusing me?
[04:28.50]You’re not serious.
[04:30.05]Mr. McAllister, we’ve worked together
[04:31.88]on the S.G.A. for 3 solid years.
[04:34.09]Besides, my own best banner was torn down.
[04:36.14]Did I do that, too?
[04:37.47]Were you or were you not
[04:38.89]working in the Looking Glass Office
[04:40.81]over the weekend?
[04:41.77]I was. So? Mr. Paterno let me in.
[04:45.44]As you know, with my many responsibilities,
[04:47.69]I often have to come in on the weekend.
[04:49.15]And I have permission to do so.
[04:51.19]But I left very early, around 6:30.
[04:54.99]6:30. 6:30?
[04:58.66]How do you know what time the posters were torn down?
[05:01.25]I don’t. I just know
[05:03.87]that they were there when I left.
[05:05.37]I’m giving you helpful information, that’s all.
[05:07.75]You know, instead of wasting your time
[05:08.79]interrogating me,
[05:11.01]we should be out there
[05:11.84]trying to figure out who did this.
[05:13.01]OK, Tracy.
[05:15.18]Who do you think did it?
[05:16.84]Whom should we interrogate?
[05:18.72]Well, I don’t know.
[05:20.47]You know, it could have been anybody.
[05:21.89]There’s a lot of subversive elements here at Carver,
[05:24.27]like Rick Thiessen or Kevin Speck and those burnouts.
[05:27.81]Or what about Tammy Metzler?
[05:28.94]I mean, her whole thing
[05:29.90]is being anti-this and anti-that.
[05:33.53]Tracy, you’re a very intelligent girl.
[05:36.66]You have a lot of admirable qualities.
[05:39.49]But one day maybe you’ll learn
[05:41.41]that being smart
[05:42.49]and doing whatever you need to do to get ahead
[05:45.12]and, yes, stepping on other people
[05:46.71]to get there,
[05:48.00]well, there’s a whole lot more to life than that.
[05:51.67]And, in the end, you’re only cheating yourself.
[05:55.34]Why are you lecturing me?
[05:57.51]This isn’t the time or the place to get into it.
[06:01.97]But there is, for just one example,
[06:04.27]a certain former colleague of mine
[06:06.23]who made a very big mistake, a life mistake.
[06:09.86]Now, I think the lesson here is that,
[06:11.32]old or young, we all make mistakes.
[06:14.94]And we have to learn that our actions,
[06:16.78]all of them, can carry serious consequences.
[06:21.74]Mm-hmm. I don’t know what you’re referring to,
[06:24.95]but maybe if certain older, wiser people
[06:27.62]hadn’t acted like such little babies
[06:29.58]and gotten so mushy,
[06:30.79]then everything would be OK.
[06:32.80]I agree, and I also think
[06:35.26]that certain young and naive people
[06:37.09]need to thank their lucky stars
[06:39.05]and be very, very grateful
[06:40.84]the entire school didn’t find out
[06:42.97]about certain indiscretions
[06:44.39]that could’ve ruined their reputations
[06:46.81]and their chances to win certain elections.
[06:49.81]And I think certain older people,
[06:51.65]like you and your colleague,
[06:53.57]shouldn’t be letching after their students,
[06:55.53]especially when some of them
[06:56.53]can’t even get their own wives pregnant,
[06:58.40]and they certainly shouldn’t be
[07:00.11]making slanderous accusations,
[07:02.49]especially when certain young, naive people’s mothers
[07:04.62]are paralegal secretaries
[07:05.99]at the city’s biggest law firm
[07:07.20]and have won many successful lawsuits.
[07:09.46]And if you want to keep questioning me like this,
[07:11.92]I won’t continue without my attorney present.
[07:19.68]You wanted to see me, Mr. McAllister?
[07:21.89]Just wait outside, Tammy.
[07:24.14]OK, but is this about the posters?
[07:27.02]Possibly. Please, just wait outside.
[07:29.60]OK, because I know who did it.
[07:32.77]So, I’ll just be outside.
[07:38.90]Don’t go anywhere, Tracy.
[07:40.28]Tammy, come on in here.
[07:43.82]This ought to be good.
[07:48.75]So, what do you have to tell me, Tammy?
[07:50.87]Well, this is hard for me,
[07:53.17]but I think it’s important to be honest,
[07:55.29]don’t you?
[07:56.46]Yeah. What is it, Tammy?
[07:58.17]I did it. I’m the one who tore down Paul’s posters.
[08:03.18]I did it.
[08:05.60]When did you do it?
[08:07.01]I don’t know... Yesterday, Sunday.
[08:09.73]How’d you get into the school?
[08:13.44]Door was open.
[08:14.77]Which door?
[08:16.61]I don’t know. All I know is I did it.
[08:19.19]Well, I don’t believe you.
[08:21.11]I have proof.
[08:35.00]Aaah-a-a-aaah
[08:38.34]Aaah-a-a-aaaah
[08:43.05]Aaah-a-a-a-aaaah
[08:48.35]Tracy?
[08:49.31]Yes?
[08:50.72]Looks like today’s your lucky day.
[08:52.77]You’re off the hook.
[08:54.06]Tammy here has confessed.
[09:06.99]I told you.
[09:09.62]I told you.
[09:10.70]You’re gonna pay for my poster!
[09:12.83]OK, easy, now, now,
[09:14.00]quit while you’re ahead,
[09:14.96]will you, Tracy? Just run along.
[09:16.46]Back to class.
[09:17.96]The rest of the day was unbearable.
[09:20.13]I kept smelling Linda on my clothes and my fingers,
[09:23.51]and I just couldn’t wait to get out of there.
[09:28.14]I wanted everything to be perfect
[09:30.43]that afternoon at the motel.
[09:31.97]So I decided to give myself
[09:33.43]a little time to prepare during eighth period.
[09:35.69]Pop quiz, everybody.
[09:38.86]Put your stuff away. Come on, no whining.
[09:41.32]If you’ve done your reading, this should be an easy one.
[09:45.07]I’d have exactly 48 minutes
[09:47.07]to make all the arrangements.
[09:48.20]If you finish early, just sit quietly
[09:49.41]and check your work. I’ll be right back.
