Egypt has begun to clear residents from its border-area with the Gaza Strip, as it tries to create a 500-metre wide buffer 1 zone along its 10-kilometre border with Gaza.
On Tuesday evening, local residents in more than one thousand homes were forced to leave, with compensation, within 48 hours. Egypt says it will be stationing military personnel on the border with Gaza, and will build a 13-kilomentre canal to prevent tunnels being dug into Egyptian territory.
Egypt declared a state of emergency for three months at the border area after at least 33 security personnel were killed last Friday in two attacks on the Sinai Peninsula, a remote but strategic region bordering Israel, Gaza, and the Suez Canal.
