Russia says it will recognize election results held in eastern Ukraine by anti-government rebels. But Washington warns the elections are illegal, and violate the international commitment to which Moscow agreed last month.
The self-declared republics of Donetsk and Luhansk elected regional leaders and parliaments this weekend. One of the self-proclaimed leaders of Donetsk campaigned in rebel-controlled areas Wednesday, to prepare for the November 2nd poll in which the rebels plan to elect a prime minister and a lawmaking body.
